Board 8 > I am thinking of getting a second PS4, change my mind

So I just had a very successful day at my business and I have decided to treat myself. I am currently leaning towards a PS4 for our bedroom to go along with a PS4 for the living room.

Context: I have been having health issues a lot lately, I work from home both in my small business venture as well as part time for a media company, and when I am not doing those I usually have to rest a lot and just... yeah rest and play games or read a book. So Ash and I have gotten into the habit of playing games together, and basically the PS4 would be so we have another place to relax together and let our son occupy the living room which he is fond of doing.

I could, in theory, get an Xbox... but I have been unconvinced by games I have seen.

I also don't need any new actual games right now, that was my December reward for a job well done to myself.

I suppose if there was a way to run a split HDMI cord to both TVs, the PS4 is positioned only 25 feet away from our other tv due to the configuration of the apartment. Would that work?

Or suggest random fun things to buy.

Both new consoles are coming this year, so I would argue buying one at this point isnt necessary, but if you must buy a new console, Id say an Xbox One X is the obvious choice.

Now hear me out, I know youre not (and rightfully so) impressed by the exclusives Xbox has. BUT, your Xbox One X will play all the next gen games (Microsoft says games will be forwards compatible for the next two years).

Additionally, for $1 you can get three months of game pass, which even the most ardent anti-Xbox people on the board admit is straight-up the best deal in gaming.

Also do not get the Xbox One X for the same reasons. Get the Xbox Series X at some point and have access to the entire console cycle backlog.

Honestly Xbox isn't even the console of exclusives as much as the console of service right now. Game pass is legit and I say that as a PC gamer. Console has a wider library so it's nice, though unnecessary for me. I'm still playing Wasteland Remastered next week, still playing the new Ori game on launch next month, still playing Gears Tactics on launch, and i haven't touched Outer Worlds yet as I've been busy with other games like Crackdown 3. I really like this niche Microsoft is carving out for itself though I can't see it being a money making prospect.

Also HDMI splitters are cheap.

If you have a PS4 and Switch and don't want to wait for the new stuff, XB1 is worth it just for game pass. I don't really see the upside in getting another PS4.

Like I said, Xbox admittedly doesnt have the exclusives right now. They do have like 11 studios working on games, but who knows.

If any exclusives DO drop, theyre gonna be playable on an Xbone for awhile because of the way Microsoft is doing cross-compatibility.

Anyway, my argument is that its all about Game Pass.

There are 10 times the great games on Game Pass than there are exclusives on PS, and many Game Pass games are added Day 1 of their console release.

Went gold yesterday and horizon and other ps4 games are going PC. They no longer exclusive? Asking PS4 owners about play anywhere on switch as an idea. All exclusives gone then?

my hot take is that microsoft has better games than sony this gen (and i don't think the microsoft games are very good)

game pass is a very good reason to get an xbox though - even if you can play things like ori and forza on pc, the game pass slate for this year is very good. they announced all mainline single player games from 7-15 are coming to game pass this year, alongside the first three yakuza games. lotta great games coming for very cheap

if you buy ps4 games digitally you might lean towards that, however, as you could share those games with both ps4s without having to buy them again

but honestly i'd just wait. we're less than 10 months away from new consoles. if you feel like treating yourself, buy a nice ereader or a big fantasy series of books you always wanted to get into.

I have 2 PS4s. I justified it because the second one was a Pro and a good deal ($300 for Death Stranding one). I have one in my man cave and one in the bedroom

It means the missus can play something on hers whilst I play mine. Or people can watch TV and someone play the PS4 without having to move it. Also good for when we have parties. We set up the PSVR on one TV, PS4 on another TV and then have a Switch too
