The bluray sets are finally becoming actual sets, at decent prices, if you want to bypass streaming entirely.
The whole Tennant run is $25 now.

Sci-fi has always been liberal. It has always used its setting for messages and social commentary. Just like three years ago people suddenly dicided that's a bad thing and started calling stuff "woke" for no reason.

I am watching Babylon five right now and if the show were to air for the first time today it would be called woke SJW garbage that hates the president. Without even changing anything. Especially the second half of season four when the Earth and the president become the main conflict.

Sci-fi is a woke genre, deal with it.

It wasnt running on multiple services simultaneously.
Once streaming services finally figure out that going broke chasing exclusivity is a bad idea, and the countless balkanized attempts to grab a sliver of a market start dying off, we'll start seeing content shotgunned out to the handful of services that survive the inevitable marketplace crash.

Doctor Who went woke in 2005. Interracial relationships, while maybe not as freaky as prior generations thought, still had their backlash - and I would imagine that a pansexual character like Captain Jack Harkness would have inspired its own sort of pearl-clutching.

Series 11 wasn't too flash. Personally I liked it over most of the Capaldi seasons - don't mind Capaldi, but the material was rubbish - but that season didn't have any crutches to fall back on. I understand why people weren't too hot on it, though I rather liked episodes like the Tsuranga Conundrum despite the backlash - so it's a throwaway monster of the week story, I rather enjoyed it.

My biggest argument against "woke Dr. Who is ruining the show" is Demons of the Punjab. Much like Rosa, it was a historical episode that explored prejudice - but it was particularly eye-opening in its subject matter (I didn't know that India and Pakistan used to be the same country, and the character wasn't a generic space racist) and it features much richer characterisation than most other episodes. The TARDIS team went back in time to the Partition of India to meet Yaz's grandmother, it featured a strong story about radicalisation, and it was a highly character driven and emotionally-focused episode in a series where the other characters were rather underwritten. Demons of the Punjab would be one of the wokest episodes of the series, and it was one of the best.

Also - series 12 got off on the wrong foot with Orphan 55, but every episode before and after that absolute turd has been fan-fucking-tastic.

Between old Doctor Who, Mr. Bean, Red Dwarf, A Bit of Fry and Laurie, and Father Ted, Britbox may not be too bad a deal, unless you've been stockpiling DVDs.

Interest in the show has been faltering for years. The Doctor being a woman has nothing to do with it, in fact I don't think she's bad. It has more to do with the current revival being 15 years old. It's hard to be interested in most things that have been around that long.

I dont know. Clara really grew on me. Id rate her a top ten companion. I just flat out hate Rose though.

-Rankings, Best to Worst-

1. Clara
2. Rory
3. Amy
4. Donna
5. Bill
6. Nordol(?)
7. Martha
8. Rose

Im not ranking the guest companions like Jack, Mickey, and River.
It's fine if you liked her but I hated that it became her show for half the time she was there.

For me, Who is on a slow slide. There were some bangers in the Capaldi era and I didn't hate Clara, but I feel the moment the showrunners realized how popular she was, they went way too hard hyping her up.

Last season was okay at best. I have no problem with the cast, but they just seem to not know what to do with them. Graham is the only one to get any real depth to his character.

This season, hoo boy. I hope I'm not treading on too many toes when I say that Orphan 55 was probably the worst episode of Who I've seen in a fair bit. Poor effects, broken continuity, all over the place writing-wise, and a glurgy moral wrap-up.

And I can't be the only one who noticed historical fun-times being played fast and loose:

Spyfall: Sorry Ada Lovelace and Noor Inayat Khan. Gotta wipe your memories so you don't know about time travel and aliens.

Tesla: Tesla and Edison know about aliens and time travel? Eh, whatever.

And yes, I'm quite aware Who never really cares about this much anyway, but it leapt out to me probably because I watched the last few eps in quick succession.

Hey, but take heart, they've brought back Captain Jack Harkness as of last episode. Although he pretty much gets warped away ten minutes after he shows up. Of course, they're setting up a late season reunion with him and the Doctor, but I wonder if he even fits with the show's tone anymore.
