Spoilers for Bojack Horseman in this topic obviously

It and The Good Place end later this week and while I like TGP fine, Bojack is incredible and I'm so sad it's ending. Everything is worse now.

https://filmschoolrejects.com/bojack-horseman-finale-review/

First review I've read, which is basically spoiler free. And glowing.

Anyway making the topic in anticipation so we can talk about it on Friday.

I can't wait.

Probably do it in triples like I usually do. That's how I got through Disenchantment and Top Boy.

So lucky that I binged through Bojack in December and barely had to wait for this. I want to savor the final episodes but will probably power through on Friday.

I feel really sad that Hollyhock apparently severed ties with him completely. Totally understandable but it was a huge gutpunch. And it was a bit under-served - I think it might have gone almost/totally unmentioned in the finale.

I think there was some genuine thoughtfulness about how Bojack's descent into "horny unicorn" was handled too. Because, yeah, Bojack is absolutely a dirtbag and should have gone to jail and yeah, all the stuff he did is terrible. He deserved what he got.

But a guy's got to make a living, and an actor - especially one like Bojack who likes (hungers for, really) the applause and adulation - needs an audience. I think it spoke volumes when he teamed up with someone even scummier and found a new audience...college dudes who were totally on his side for the whole thing and see him as somebody fighting against "#metoo" (even though he's not, not deliberately anyway). So of course Bojack, who I don't think really wants to be associated with that kind of person, ends up being an icon for them because he was so shunned, so rejected by society that he did a deal with the devil (Vance Waggoner) and made a stupid movie that would probably piss off an awful lot of people just by existing.

I'm not saying that we should like, coddle somebody like Bojack after all the shit he did. And I don't think that's what the show was saying either - it was more of a cautionary tale, how a man can become something like that if you insist on dogpiling. You can do it if you want, and he probably deserves every last bit of it, but it does have consequences; the final few episodes seemed to be saying that if you viciously reject a guy en masse, he's still going to find an audience of people who defend him and there's a good chance he'll then abandon any attempt to even appear "good" and simply lean in to all the stuff you hate him for (because that's what his new fans love him for), rendering the whole exercise of hating him a bit counterproductive. It's like the show commits to "#metoo culture" but doesn't fully commit to "#cancel culture" - by acknowleding Bojack deserves what he gets but by showing the downsides of #cancelling somebody in that way.

I dunno. I thought that was a particularly interesting avenue to go down and one I didn't expect.

watching episode 7 (Or I guess 15) now and I just laughed so long and hard I had to pause the show at I started a zach which started the whole world braffing

I understand on some level you have to end the show sometime because it has an actual story and character development and stuff, but I could watch another 1000 episodes of the dumb pop culture word play shit this show does.

Exactly how I feel. You can tell the "fast forward" in the last episode was intended to be a full season.

I'm still chewing on this after finishing and it gives me a weird feeling.

It's a little rushed but not really that rushed outside of a few characters and moments. A lot of stuff that feels that COULD have been fleshed out but didnt really need to be. The conclusion feels satisfactory and it makes sense but it's also vaguely unsatisfying in a way that makes me feel like I'm missing something or that there's supposed to be more.

But the more I think about it the more I think that was the point. It fits the themes very well and I honestly cant think of anything that would have made the actual ending better besides there simply being more show.

Yeah that's how I feel, especially the last episode. Through his discussions with the other characters, theres a large "is this it? What now?" sort of feel to everything. And that's exactly how I feel so it feels intended that the ending was... just there.

I always like to think about why we are seeing this time that is the show of this characters life and it started when Diane and Bojack met and ended when she completely cut him out. Even Todd cut him out. Everyones life seemed to go better after they cut him out.

I think this is what was so interesting about S4. Bojack was mostly on his own dealing with the Hollyhock plotline, but the show went from Bojack interfering in the others' lives to the others roping him back into their lives because they needed him again. But eventually the characters all started to move past that.

Diane ended up being my favorite character starting from like last season and it continued this season and I wasn't expecting that.

All in all that was a good ending. Now having fully seen it all, I will agree it felt slightly rushed in spots but nothing that destroyed anything for me. REALLY liked that it ended with Diane and Bojack on the roof.

Oh and that Christopher Nolan dig by PB got me good

It was a good semi-season, answered most of the questions from the first half. Ducked this topic like I owed money before watching.

Bit kinda narked that Hollyhock basically gave Bojack the red card by effectively ghosting him and disconnecting her phone and the letter was left ambiguous as fuck. Too bad because I like the character and she was effectively the one person that Bojack hadn't completely poisoned/alienated/

Called the Max/Paige thing but was kind of gutted that that went nowhere. Those two were a great double act

The problem with Season 6 is the same with Season 5.... The Penultimate ep always outshines the actual finale.

Glad to see Todd evolve. .

As with most of everyone I'm two minds about the end.

*sighs* Wake me up when Cobra Kai starts up (I'm aware it's NOT a NETFLIX show but One of my fave off-network things)
