I don't disagree that that section was bad but I do disagree that that was a good game.

I hated it, myself. Badly needed checkpoints before the bosses. And not consumable ones.

Personally I didn't really think it needed checkpoints given how short the missions are and the game in general is but I can see why people would want them.

It's definitely aged but I still think it's great.

The Mass Effect 1 planets look cool but 80% of them are just copy pasted bases with "enemies everywhere!" inside and fallen satellites that make you play Simon Says for things you don't need. Now and again there are also Thresher Maws.

I think there's around three side planets that actually have unique things on them. The Moon Base with the AI, the one with the space monkeys and the one with that weird big object which was probably supposed to be used to foreshadow something in a sequel.

Bioshock 2 - The underwater parts. They were just segues between levels and didn't really serve any purpose. They were short though so whatever.

Amnesia - the water part. Nothing about it was really bad but I thought it took away from the atmosphere a little bit.

The Abandon Ship mission in Just Cause 3 comes to mind for me. Trying to defend Mario while effectively using the EMP to take out some electronic capabilities of some enemies while also defending the EMP device got old.....fast.

Either Mario just stands there getting mowed down by gunfire and by the time I get done babysitting him the EMP has taken quite a few direct hits to where it's almost destroyed. It was just beyond frustrating, to say the least. I eventually got by the mission but not before quite a bit of swearing and almost throwing my controller a few times.

Last mission that got me this frustrated was the church/base defense mission in Mercenaries 2.

There were some side markers on those maps where they were on the side of a mountain, a lot of the space probes for example weren't on a path. Annoyingly those collectibles were needed to help with the achievements/trophies that were tied to the "beat the majority of the game with X character in your team."

The problem is the bosses were also pretty hard. Maybe not so much when you get used to them but they also can kill you so quickly that you don't have time to get used to them without putting in several attempts, which means several trips through the stage.

9 isn't terrible once you figure it out, but yeah it was kind of a B to figure out. In fairness, it had to have something to do with the geysers but after luring it over one, what you actually have to do makes no sense.

Though I would submit that 12 was way worse.

Also forgot to add Peragus in KOTOR 2. I'm sure it was better on a first playthrough going in blind and not knowing the big twists of that section, but on repeat playthroughs...the section is just ridiculously long and tedious. You're stuck with the same 3 shitty weapons throughout the entire map. Your character's force abilities aren't developed yet. I think the only actual armor you get is that mining outfit. And I believe there's only like 3 different types of enemies besides the boss and they're ALL droids.

Some others I've remembered

- King Dice level in Cuphead. Just becomes very tedious if you end up dying near the end of it, and the mini bosses aren't that fun to fight.

- DMC4 being good is debatable, but regardless of what you may think of it you have to admit the dice sections were awful. It was somewhat easy enough to manipulate the dice rolls, but it was still the most tedious part of the game by a large margin.

And what's with something like that being in the last freaking area? Like, we should be preparing for the climax, not introducing new mechanics.

You play the dice game first in Mission 6 though, it's not a new mechanic when you see it in Mission 19.

The fact that they had you do it twice is the worst part of it. Once would have been fine, especially once you figure out how to manipulate the rolls.

That's what most GTA Online heist players I played with thought. They would follow the yellow marked route even if it meant they failed and had to restart the whole thing all over again. Meanwhile I go up over the mountains and take shortcuts every which way and make it to the final checkpoint, where I stand there waiting until I see "XYZABC123 has died", followed by however many other players who were following them doing the same because the cops took them out.

Hey, you know whats fun? Bosses that require the use of one specific weapon to beat! Especially when you have little margin for error in terms of energy. Did I mention its freaking Crash Bomb and Bubble Lead?

Mega Man 3 - The Wily Fortress
So youve beaten all the robot masters and triumphed over the Doc Robots in their neat remixed stages and now the Wily Fortress is going to be the games crowning glory, right? Wrong! Welcome to boring, empty levels with ridiculously easy bosses that were clearly not given the love and care that makes the rest of the game so great.

Don't forget how your energy doesn't refill on death and the only enemies to farm on after the respawn point are annoying as hell so if you waste a Crash Bomb your best option is to jump on spikes repeatedly to get a game over.

Oh yeah, basically everything after Anor Londo. Feels like the whole 2nd half was rushed.

Nothing about Tomb of the Giants is fun, you have to give up your shield or your weapon for a light you might not have even picked up, only to be kicked off a cliff by a skeleton.

Duke's Archives is a cool design, and you can definitely tell this was the area they designed right after Anor Londo. Seath himself is total shit though, curse is a bullshit status that procs way too quickly in that fight for something that is an instant death and takes half your health. Not to mention the bullshit run up to him

Lost Izalith speaks for itself. Looks like the devs found the magic of copy paste during crunch time, and went nuts. The most egregious shit here though is how you need to give up one of your two ring slots to not die to the lava, but you still take damage and get armor degradation anyway. Plus the constant sound of fire from your footsteps.

I'm not even gonna get into the bed of Chaos. You can tell Izalith was made last, what a pile of shit.

I played the shit out of Dark Souls at launch, and loved it, but it was fucking rough going back straight off of 3

There's a helm that emits light, bro. You don't have to give up either of those things. Well, you do have to give up something ... Or rather, someone.

That said, Tomb isn't a very fun area regardless.

Wait. He procs curse? Lmao it's been too long. My biggest issue with Duke's was definitely just getting to Seath after going into the cave. P.I.T.A.

Agree 100% on Lost Izalith and Bed of Chaos though.
