Been playing The Outer Worlds which is a good game but there is a side quest were

You have to find 3 specific faction outfits across the universe and bring them to a shopkeeper, when chances are you already found and sold them a dozen times over before getting the quest not knowing it's important.

Then once you do that she sends you back to the same places you just were with a list of macguffins to gather.

Then once you do that you have to walk back and forth across the map for literally no reason.

Then they just kill the NPC Questgiver for no reason despite her being a super likable character.


It's just such shit game design and story on so many levels, half the quest is loading screens.

And it got me thinking, what are some other examples of great video games which suddenly turn shit for a little while?

A lot of people say the Cloister of the Trials in FFX but I liked those.

Blood trail platforming during the dream sequences in Max Payne.

The controls are not designed for platforming that specific, and when you fall you hear the most horrifying, nightmare scream in the history of sound. I used to mute my TV during that part.

They're not so bad if you know exactly what to do, which I do. But yeah, I hated them the first time

My answer is Cloud's memory in Final Fantasy VII. It's a good part of the game, but after playing 100+ times, it really drags the game down at that point

I dislike in jrpgs where you're whisked off to an area/place and you can't return to the main hub of the game until you complete it. So like twilight town is an example, or the time you go to the future in chrono trigger.

Mega Man Battle Network 3 Blue/White - Having to find the Iceball M battle chip for the kid in the hospital. The virus that drops this chip is rare to find even with the appropriate navi cutomizer parts. You might not even get the battle chip after beating it too.

Mega Man Zero - Disabling the bombs at the factory. There's a leap of faith section over a bottomless pit with moving platforms.

Call of Duty Black Ops - Kicking the barrels in the mission S.O.G. on veteran difficulty. Good fucking luck

Mario Kart Wii - Unlocking 3 Stars in every prix. Not only do you have to get 1st place every race, but you also have to drive perfectly (like no off-roading and hitting walls) and never drop out of first place at any point during the prix.

Its kinda shitty on purpose. Chapter 4 in the original paper Mario also had a ton of backtracking. Chapter 4 in Super Paper Mario was also really shitty. Im convinced its on purpose lol

The final boss in Secret of Mana.

1 - It's fucking Flammie, your adorable AF companion and airship.

2 - The only things that matter are sword skill of Boy and the Dryad levels of Sprite and Girl. And maybe some of the other buffs on Girl. That's IT. The whole game is fun variety with 8 weapon types and 7 elements per spellcaster but unless you've actively been raising your Dyrad level on purpose, it's level 0 which means the duration of Mana Sword is like 4 seconds. And NO ONE levels Dryad does, outside of using foreknowledge and metagaming -- seriously! Sprite gets Sleep Flower (2 MP) which is a silly debuff when you can just nuke something outright with a leveled element, and Burst (4 MP) which deals just as much damage as a 2 MP spell for another school. Girl gets Reflect which reflects even her own healing/buffs, and Revive which doesn't happen often by the time you get Dryad.

So now it's Boy who gets to strike at your pet for tiny ass windows and the girls who should be able to help somehow else are stuck just being Boy's Cheerleaders.


3 - Oh, and Mana's dead now so RIP(?) Sprite.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
The goddamned sewer. It's incredibly long, full of dangerous enemies, offers little in the way of blood, and, oh yeah, the goddamned swimming puzzles. It's also one of the least visually interesting areas in the game. Just awful. Most fan patches include a secret hatch towards the beginning that can be accessed by hacking for this very reason. It takes you straight to the last part of the sewers, getting around the horrible swimming segments.

Dynasty Warriors 4
The Nanman Campaign. It's a horrible, abusive stage. It takes forever, there are countless enemy plots and traps, large poisonous swamps that constantly sap your health, and did I mention the stage is massive? You'll spend your entire time rushing around the battlefield, futilely attempting to save your hapless CPU allies, and if Zhuge Liang bites it, you lose(he will be in near constant danger)! Have fun You might if you're Zhuge Liang.
