No major subscription provider generates reliable profits from streaming video. The king, Netflix Inc., has borrowed $13 billion as the cash it spends on programming exceeds the fees it gets from subscribers. (Netflix is profitable on a noncash basis.) Walt Disney Co. says that Hulu, which it took over last year, wont turn a profit until 2023 or later. HBO Max, which is launching this year, is forecast to be unprofitable through 2024. By most outsiders estimates, Disney+, Prime Video from Amazon.com, CBS All Access, Apple TV+, and YouTube TV arent paying for themselves.

That's understandable. Licensing costs are probably insane and Netflix doesn't even run ads. It's a wonder they can operate at all.

They don't 'profit' but every still makes money?

They make back their operating costs and break even.

i have no idea what this means

also, is there some weird "hollywood accounting" stuff going on? where even $2 billion box office movies are "unprofitable" so companies can pay lower taxes and those contracts where someone gets 5% of the profit means they get nothing at all?

It means they profit through accrual.

And yes, a project that bombs can be written off in taxes.

Explains the surge in exclusive shows. Probably able to keep all the rights to them.

Didn't they spend $1 billion on the rights to Friends alone

I was going to say Netflix needs to just start selling their shows but apparently they do have S1 and S2 DVDs of Stranger Things on Amazon >_> That's crazy.

It's actually kind of weird to me how huge companies have entire services and divisions that aren't profitable ever. I'm still trying to understand it.

$100 million, and whoever bought the rights spent $425 million. Then Netflix bought Seinfeld rights for $500 million.

Yeah when it first started out. Took around the mid 360 era for it to be profitable IIRC. A lot of the thought process behind it was to block PlayStation from taking over the living room (not in a gaming sense but in a Windows competitor sense) so they were willing to take the hit.

Likewise I'm pretty sure the PS3 wasn't a profitable period for Sony either. Again they were likely willing to take the hit to ensure Blu-ray would be the market leader.

Probably isn't that they aren't profitable but that they blow all their profits on making originals to try and be #1.

Because it will be even more profitable to monopolize the future #1 spot than to take the profits they get now.

Netflix needs to go back to countless B-movies on streaming, and merging the DVD-by-mail back into it.
