About 20 minutes for a Pokemon Direct is pretty long. This beats out the roughly 15 minute Pokemon Direct we had last June for Sword/Shield.

With 20 minutes being dedicated to this Pokemon Direct, it's hard to imagine we won't get any announcements related to either Sword/Shield or a 2020 mainline Switch game.

Hello everyone,
My name is Junichi Masuda.
About a year ago I was interviewed about the subject of bringing Pokemon over to Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield.
As I said back then, we knew players felt bad about not being able to bring over their favorites from Pokemon Gold, Silver and Crystal to Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, and we wanted to avoid that.
We, sadly, were unable to do that. But we heard the criticism and we know how important your old Pokemon are to you.
And because of that, ever since Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield came out, we have been working extra hard to bring over every Pokemon into Sword and Shield, together with all the moves not available in the games.
But I am happy to say that the work is now done. Every Pokemon available in Pokemon Bank can be transfered to Pokemon HOME. And after downloading the latest patch for Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield, every Pokemon from Pokemon HOME will be transferable to Pokeomn Sword and Pokemon Shield
By the way, Pokemon HOME is available...right now -laughs- haha

I am getting my hopes up obviously, but I humor this idea

the entirety of sword/shield is designed to be more accessible, which meant limiting the number of pokemon and moves in order to create a (hopefully) better competitive metagame and a (unquestionably) more accessible entrypoint for newcomers, without sacrificing the depth of IVs/EVs/natures/abilities/items from previous games. to just immediately undo all of that by barfing the "missing" 490 pokemon back into the dex all at once would really defeat the purpose of what they tried to do, and that's not going to happen.

i'm sarcastic to a point about the dexit stuff, but people mistake what was a concerted effort of game design for laziness, and that's just...whatever. you're not gonna be satisfied until every last slugma and skrelp is back in the lineup and i suppose that's your prerogative, but i think the games are doing alright for themselves tbqh.

This game isn't any more balanced than the last ones. Dragapult and Galarian Darmanitan are used even more than Landorus was. Excadrill has about the same usage. Just because Landorus is gone doesn't make it a better metagame.

i meant more about taking out megas and most legendaries but sure competitive balance has never been particularly exceptional. i still think they tried to make more things competitively viable but that's pretty subjective anyway

Losing the Legendaries is worse given how good Zacian is. It's used on nearly 97% of teams in high level AG and 92% in high level ubers. It'd be nice to have something left that can counter it.

Isn't it a hard-counter? (talking about typings, I am not expert in the meta-scene)

I do think it definitely made competitive more accessible.

A variety streamer I watched on Twitch that basically only ever touched Pokemon in the form of Pokemon Stadium 2 randos went in not knowing any Pokemon beyond the first two gens, and barely even knowing types/effectiveness/etc., made a team of specifically non-meta Pokemon just based on stuff he liked, made one or two tweaks for coverage, and ended up in the top 20k by the end of the season.

It was a truly enjoyable process to watch.

Gamefreak decides not to put every pokemon in the game and they're lazy. Other game developers don't put playable female characters in games because it'd take too much time and people say 'that checks out'.

Close Combat and Play Rough both OHKO after Intrepid Sword and a plus attack nature, and Zacian is so much faster that it easily out speeds Reshiram even if Reshiram has a plus speed nature.

Edit: Actually, the damage calculator I used was dumb. They only OHKO after Stealth Rock damage, which isn't really much better.

yeah i think not enough people are giving credit to the fact that having all 400 available mons accessible between just the two games this gen has done a lot for people who are interested in building competitive teams and need a place to start.

Deoxys or Pheromosa would probably be the best bet, just because they outspeed and can OHKO with a Dynamax move.

It doesn't matter how many Pokmon are in the game right now. Unless you hack, you can only get the 400 + Mew right now. You could still have your smaller metagame until Home comes out. And by the time Home comes out, most of the casual players will have moved on to something else. It wouldn't even be that hard to get whatever you needed if they didn't also cut the GTS. Heck, I built a competitive team in USUM getting a bunch of unobtainable stuff on the GTS.

I don't really blame people who look at the national dex complainers and think "oh wow so entitled they want a billion pokemon" because I'm sure from the outside it looks like that

but from the inside it's that we've been dealing with pokemon constantly cutting features and lowering quality, and we've all been kinda shrugging and being like "eh as long as I have all my pokemon I'll deal with it" I don't know if any pokemon fan ever expected to get all pokemon forever in every game until the end of time, but the way they handled it was extremely shitty.

Take smash bros for example. They brought back everyone sakurai was like "dude it was more work than the pyramids we're not doing this again" and most reasonable people are like "sure. let's celebrate this last big hurrah with all these characters, thanks sakurai"

Conversely, Matsuda just outright lied about his reasoning, cut them out of nowhere, and then proceeded to deliver us a clearly unfinished and unpolished game. This is a company that makes so much money off their brand they could buy an entire nation, and they couldn't handle reusing assets from their previous game?

In Smogon's National Dex metagames (where all Pokemon are available), Primal Groudon, Dusk Mane Necrozma, and Ho-Oh can somewhat keep Zacian in check. In the regular Galar Dex metagame, Ditto is about the only option available as it copies all of Zacian's existing stat boosts when it transforms, plus gets its own +1 Attack boost from Intrepid Sword.

Time for Ultra Sword and Ultra Shield.

I saw someone suggest MAX Sword and MAX Shield as possible names for the expanded version of Sword/Shield. That name suggestion makes more sense than Ultra Sword and Ultra Shield with Dynamax being the new mechanic for Gen 8.

for me I was never angry about the pokedex, just severely disappointed. Same with Sun and Moon not having a National Dex

I've only ever played the series to catch em all. The battle system and the RPG surrounding it never really did much for me, it was just maintaining that living collection of every pokemon.

Oh wait, we still don't know what mythical Pokemon Sword/Shield are gonna have, since Game Freak actually left out their data for once. We could get a reveal of one of them tomorrow too. IIRC January/February is usually when they get "officially" revealed to start advertising for the yearly movies in Japan.

Maybe a new mythical will be revealed and then PLOT TWIST! That mythical pokemon is also going to be one of the DLC Smash fighters. You know, before anyone has even seen it and its popularity is completely unknown.

At the very least, I expect at least one mobile game. Ever since Pokemon Go, it seems like the Pokemon Company has been trying to wildly throw darts at a dartboard and hoping one of them hits the center of the board. With Pokemon Go showing the true potential of what kind of profit a mobile game can bring in, the race is on to try and find the next Pokemon mobile game that can achieve even half of what Pokemon Go has accomplished. Which explains the massive focus on mobile games after Pokemon Go.

Pokemon Masters had some potential of being a huge game, but it's dropped off very hard since its initial release.
