Do the most basic ones where the main characters tell you to press certain buttons for basic actions in the beginning of the game count?

like, tutorials? no those dont count

i mean 4th wall breaking integrated into the story (for non-comedic purposes). like in a certain horror visual novel where the main antagonist tries to speak with you the human via files on your computer, or in a certain shooter game where a character points not quite at the protagonist, but subtly at the camera (the player) and yells "he turned us into fucking killers"

Not just PC games, the original Spyro on PSX had it to counter piracy as well.

Seem to recall several instances where the main character introduces the main cast, or to explain mechanics.

That game had a lot of it even the torture scene had a nod to the camera before it started after explaining how it worked if I remember correctly, but that could have been twin snakes remake.

I never took this as anything but asking 9s directly.

I guess people who play NA are so horny theyre constantly thinking of fucking the main character that they took this as 4th wall breaking.

I see why me and NA fans dont get a long.

and if we're counting "directed at the player " dialogue than pretty much Conrad's entire rant at the end of spec ops the line qualifies

Along the lines of:

"You killed 47 people. you could have stopped at any time but on you matched because you wanted to be a hero."

Another one from MGS1: Ocelot tells you in the torture scene that if you die from torture, you can't continue. IIRC he even has extra dialog that only plays if it's been a while since your last save.

That one's an especially good example because it's there to raise the stakes.

Yeah but it definitely left you going what in the world. Which was, of course, the goal.

Of course, there was no way for them to really follow up on/explain that, and sure enough, when they tried it was as unbelievable as you would expect. But for that like ten seconds it blew minds like crazy.

I never thought it was too much of a mindblower, just a cool thing. We know those "gods" have absurd abilities of foresight, so she just foresaw that Desmond would be there, at the time, watching.
