Legend has it there was a glitch and all of the difficulty modes were "Easy", and people complained and so for the sequel even "easy" was painful. I thought "Easy" was painful to begin with in classic though -_-.

Here's a livestream where literally their first mission is a base defense full of tier 2 enemies. It causes them to instantly lose the game. Well, for a certain value of instantly, it takes them an hour to lose the mission.

The game has a bullshit mechanic built in for "fairness". Basically, if you make too many successful shots, it makes you auto miss an attack, just so it isn't too easy for you.

Watch ChristopherOdd's older XCOM let's play videos (before he did all the modding). I learned so much from that guy.

Total Biscuit is another popular one, but I thought he played kind of loose and aggressive.

yeah i agree if you have trouble with xcom that you need to watch others play it for a bit to get a sense of tactical strategies.

notice how they advance and cover. i feel this is crucial to gameplay because youll be repeating missions over & over until you get it right. watching others play gives you the luxury of watching them from the sidelines. you have chances to observe and learn the layout of the map to better prepare you for your own run.

It makes me so damned angry, but I still love it. You're just doing a mission and realize everything's going well and that's when you realize that other shoe is going to drop. You're going to lose people, you're going to get wildly unlucky, you're probably going to fail missions f***** Newfoundland man. How do you win that the first time!? The challenge is to survive and overcome.

Agreed.

Lots of missions end in a certain amount of turns. However, if that really is a problem for you, you can double those timers before you start a new game. But it really isn't all that bad, since those missions almost always offer ways to increase the timer.

And if you play War of the Chosen (which is fan fucking tastic if I might add), you'll be fighting against a Doomsday clock as well, but again, lots of ways to slow down that progress.

If you're getting screwed, 90% of the time it's probably your fault. RNG is a factor in the game for sure, but that's why you work around it. Every turn your goal should be to make all the moves you can to minimize the impact the RNG has. That's why tools like explosives are so valuable, because they're usually guaranteed damage. You don't play the game by running your soldier up to a piece of cover and firing. You're supposed to put some thought into your engagements. When you engage the enemy, what attack you open up with, and the positions your soldiers are in when you activate a pod are all very important. If you do those right, most of the time things will go smoothly.

Also, both modern XCOM games become significantly easier midway through the game when your soldiers start gaining incredibly powerful abilities. Yes, even if you play damn near perfectly you can't eliminate the RNG entirely. There's still always the chance your soldier misses a 99% shot. But oddly that potential for a screw-up like that can make things really exciting sometimes.

I always played "X-Com: Terror from the Deep" as a primarily Heavy Demolitions team with everybody packing heavy fire power / Explosives when possible.

Half the time, the randomly generated battle field was just a series of craters and that's the way I liked solving things =D.

Open a random door, see an alien nearly face to face, drop Heavy Explosives at their feet, close door, run away as far as remaining points allows me.

It always seems to do the trick.

Funny how the buildings core skeleton/structure was invincible, but the panels were very destroyable.

I did try to play as smart and careful as possible, but it seemed every time I was actually doing decent or especially good the game would just throw curve balls and screw me with screwy RNG shits and aliens spawning behind me a lot. There's challenge and then there's just the game messing with you and it was just not fun.
