I was in grade 7 or 8 in school way back when the media would shit all over her and Britney Spears (media was was brutal towards pop stars back then). This video specifically I remember she was shamed because her clothes were "too skimpy for her old age" which I just find bizarre AF. MTV and Much Music (Here in Canada) were slowly stopping playing music and instead became gossip stations dedicated to pretty much just trash-talking celebrities, bad influence on our children, dress too slutty, too old, etc. That is all pop-culture shows ever did. Here was one interview Britney Spears did in 2003. It's also why she started pandering so hard to the gay community (who were one of the few demographics still really into her) around that point, and why she later threw a fit when Lady Gaga showed up and basically did the same "shock people into paying attention to you" shtick Madonna used to get famous in the 80s. Madonna stopped making music worth caring about in the 90s, and by the mid-2000s she was basically a sad grandma that most people didn't spend all that much time paying attention to or caring about. To be fair, though, that might just be more the case that in the mid-2000s I wasn't hanging out with cutting-edge music critics or pop culture obsessives who flipped out over whoever the flavor of the month was. Maybe in those sort of circles people were more into shitting on Madonna and I just missed it.
