This is a topic to rate the contest strength of potential newcomers in the current contest environment.

I will pick the characters to rate and discuss for each day from user nominations - whoever the 3 most nominated characters are at that time. If there are more than 3 I will pick randomly. You can nominate any number of characters at any time, but you cannot nominate the same character twice.

All characters who were present in the 2018 Character Battle will NOT be eligible. Otherwise you can nominate any character that has appeared in video games; even comic book characters. This will exclude real-life athletes who have only appeared in long running sports series, however I will accept those who have their own games such as Shaq. I will accept nominations for iconic gaming duos too, if there is a compelling reason for both characters to be linked (either co-starring in a game ala Banjo & Kazooie, or always appearing together like Callie & Marie from Splatoon).

Each day will have a separate topic, and nominations will carry over. As far as actually rating the character's contest strength; I ask that users rank a characters potential strength with one of the following qualifiers - LAW Fodder, Low Fodder, Mid Fodder, High Fodder, Fodder Line, Low Midcarder, Midcarder, High Midcarder, Near Elite, Elite, LAW Tier (capable of beating Link). I will average all the ratings given to a character to come up with their final ranking. I have included a highlighted entrant from Character Battle X on each tier of the strength rankings below, to provide a baseline for each.

Note that LAW Fodder is meant to be a tier reserved for the weakest possible characters to put into a contest. A character will only be placed there if at least 3/4ths of the voters for that day agree on the LAW Fodder rating, and no ratings above Low Fodder are given. If either of those conditions are not met, the character will not be eligible for the LAW Fodder tier.

Ipkiss vs. Broly is BACK baby

It seems Ariel's not on the document for characters we've done? I remember us voting on her but don't remember the result. Whatever. Nominate her for re-ranking regardless. Doing it again will probably be faster than figuring out what happened.

I must have accidentally removed Ariel when I put her on the Re-ranking list. I added her back under her original ranking. I will also nominate her for re-ranking.

High Fodder for Broly. Another character that benefits from childhood nostalgia, as he was THE COOLEST to kids back in the day. His design is incredibly distinctive and he has a brutal fighting style that is rare for Saiyan characters. Plus he is in a lot of DBZ games. The DB Super version of Broly was received well, but I'm not sure if voters would associate him with the OG Broly strongly enough for it to make a difference.

I can't put The Mask higher than Low Fodder. The 1994 movie is extremely well-known, but Mask doesn't have much else besides that and the animated series. I really doubt that the movie is a favorite on Gfaqs, which it would have to be for Mask to have any strength. His design is distinctive, but I just don't think the site likes him enough for it to make a difference.

Paratroopa I will give High Fodder. He is just as iconic as the regular Koopa, but is RED and has WINGS. Those 2 things are enough to give the Paratroopa a much more pleasing and unique design, compared to the bland boring Koopa Troopa. Para appears in a LOT of games, including many spinoff games where he is a somewhat popular pick.

Broly (Dragonball Z) - Mid fodder

The Broly movies never actually played on Toonami back in the day, to say nothing of all the local channels the show was on. An anime character that appeals more to the hardcore fans than the casuals who watched it on TV when gamefaqs' main focus has always been games doesn't sound like a success to me. He did have some popularity regardless and he got that new movie I haven't seen that people apparently liked and he's still in DBZ games and stuff so I guess that might save him from Low, though.

The Mask (The Mask) - Low fodder

We all know Ipkiss would would exterminate Broly in a real fight as was correctly voted here many years ago but yeah he's not worth much in this context.

Koopa Paratroopa (Mario series) - High fodder. Koopa Troopa does have original Super Mario Kart going for him over Paratroopa for worthwhile appearances but I don't think it really matters. So yeah Paratroopa might be marginally stronger.

Gotta say though. Goomba being Fodder line and Koopa Troopa being mid fodder don't go together well for me, I don't think there's a big gap at all. I could sort of see Goomba as barely fodder-line and the Troopas a tier below but not more than that. Re-nominate Koopa Troopa.

I'm not sure if I'm taking crazy pills or something, but I could've sworn they ran the Broly movies in the 90s. I'm assuming they aired in some capacity on CN after their 2000s dub release. The new movie had a worldwide theater release too - that has to count for something.

Also only one nomination for Re-ranking is allowed per day. I'll count your nom for Koopa but Urbosa will need to wait until day 200.

Wasn't shown on Toonami until 2014, after the Adult Swim revival, by which point anime on U.S. television no longer really mattered to the gamefaqs demographic.

And while the new Broly movie was certainly shown in U.S. theaters and earned good money, I think it was mostly shown as special events or in weird arthouse theatres. At least in my neck of the woods, I don't think it was like a new Hollywood movie where you could go to any normal theatre during the month or so after its U.S. theatrical release and reasonably expect it to be showing that day.

Broly: Mid Fodder - Axem is correct about the new movie's North American distribution, and at any rate, if only the biggest of 2019 games make a noticeable difference here, why would movies be any different?

Mask: Low Fodder

Paratroopa: Mid Fodder - I'm still not convinced GameFAQs cares much about generic Mario enemies, and the regular Koopa simply feels more like a spinoff mainstay and someone with a distinct fanbase.

I will nominate Nier as well, and nominate Koopa Troopa for Re-Ranking. I'm still kind of thinking Para is stronger, but Troopa I guess is a bit more iconic and had a bigger presence in the SNES and early N64 era.
