im simply listing extremely well known characters that are generally liked or viewed in a favorable light for their portrayal in their works, but that people would not deem to be likable by most definitions of the word.

I kind of stretched with Oscar the Grouch.

Let the record reflect that Walter White was not in that post when I posted. I know who Walter White is.

But with that second post you seem to be equating the anti-authority rebellion of Chloe with a string of mass murders and psychopaths.

Of you're asking me if anti-authority characters can be likeable, then most definitely yes. Stone Cold and DX were the most popular faces of a generation.

Then again, I also don't understand how Chloe isn't likable. Is she abrasive? Sure, she's gone through some shit in her life that she's still working through. That's what makes her a fascinating character imho. Fiction would be boring if everyone needed to be an angel like Kate in order to be likable. For me, these traits would only detract from likability if they have no logical backing or if they're all a character has (A certain character turning into a cartoon villain in Ep5 of LiS was shit, for example, because it was over-the-top and made no sense). Chloe getting angry over Max taking a phone call makes sense because Max ghosting her is still an open wound, so that's fine with me.

There's also a whole lot more to Chloe than those traits. Episode One of LiS is actually a great example of this once she and Max reunite. Surly Chloe is angry Max never contacted her, sad about Rachel, wants to be alone... and then she finds the photo that shows Max saved her life earlier that day. It's like a switch gets thrown, all that other stuff gets thrown to the side, and she's back to being a best friend again. The fun dancing antics gets cut off pretty quick by David, but still! Chloe can be a great friend and she shows that over and over (Ep2 train track convo, Ep3 pool adventure, and so on).

Chloe is also the friend you want with you when shit gets real. Sometimes you want to go out and have a nice cup of tea with a person like Kate. If you suspect your father is cheating on your mother and you want backup, though, that's when you want a Chloe. Ep1 of BtS was so great in how it started the Chloe/Rachel relationship (it characterized Rachel amazingly with her being manipulative towards Chloe to get her support, but we're talking about Chloe here). This era of Chloe should be her at her most angsty with David entering her life and no Max, but Rachel instantly pierces that just by relating to her on her level. Hey Chloe, want to skip school? Fuck yeah Chloe wants to skip school. There was also that great moment in Ep4 of LiS where Nathan catches her and Max snooping around his dorm. This is a guy who killed Chloe a few days ago in an alternate timeline, and she knows it. He's got a gun. She backs away alongside Max for the first few seconds, scared. When Nathan actually starts moving towards Max, though? Oh no you don't, Chloe charges forward and pushes him back until Warren shows up to help.

So, in conclusion, Chloe is the best character ever and super likable.

I keep saying, there is a big difference between being a good, enjoyable character and being a likable person. Chloe is a fantastic character who is not a likable person. I'll refer you back to my example. If you knew someone exactly like her IRL, tragic past and all, would you enjoy being around her?

I'm basically a Max-type and the best friend I've ever had was like a less traumatized Chloe, so yeah I'd probably be good friends with her.

I just can't see how someone can watch the magical scene of her and Max in the pool and not think Chloe is the best friend a person could ever have.

They are all characters people like but are not likable. And dont try to tell me that the HxH fanbase does not absolutely love Hisoka.

well you tend to like the rebellious tough guy/girl act for someone who's secretly broken underneath so yeah

for me the act tends to wear so thin so quickly that I can't gin up the sympathy when the tragic backstory actually comes to the surface

I didn't even hesitate to sacrifice her. It just felt like the perfect ending to her arc, and it really just seemed like that was the point of the whole adventure - that if Max had just left well everything alone in the beginning, other than Chloe dying, everything was going to turn out the way it was supposed to. Nathan gets arrested, implicates Jefferson, Rachel's body is found, Kate is vindicated and doesn't attempt suicide, even Frank realizes his responsibility in what happened and still gets to have his "moment."

I hope if they made 'save Chloe' the Canon ending if they ever make another game with those characters they go full on Final Destination with it. Max has been rewinding and saving Chloe repeatedly for years.
