Life is Strange 1/Before the Storm spoilers obv

I've started on my immense backlog, especially those that I missed completely during my dark era and after RE2Make this was the one I really wanted to get to.

I didn't think a prequel could work to LiS since... Well we knew how it all ends, but damn was I wrong. In some aspects it even hits harder than the original. The end of Episode one where Rachel goes all pyro has stuck with me the most, I haven't been able to stop listening to "Flaws" since then.

But yes, Chloe. Seeing the evolution of her relationship with Rachel and why she was so hellbent on finding her really just fully fleshed out the character. After BtS, the end of LiS Ep4 hits even harder. And Rachel isn't a great person, but then again neither is Max. But everything comes together where you get the full feel of Chloe's character.

And BtS only strengthens my resolve in #SacrificeChloe, don't @ me. I think it's the perfect end to her arc and makes her a nearly perfect character.

Since there's only like 2 weeks left in this year, I doubt my mind changes on this either. With just LiS Chloe was top ten, with BtS she's the runaway (no pun) number one.

Make arguments for your number ones if you must, just know you'll be wrong and I am unshakable on this fact.

Chloe's great. Max is better and BiS doesn't compare with 1 (that rewind mechanic is the champ of this series), but yeah she's terrific.

Sacrifice Chloe is the true ending IMO. Even if everything else seems to indicate that it's the alternate ending. It's just too perfect.

I actually preferred Before the Storm to the first Life is Strange.

Before playing it, I too thought, "man there's no way this short prequel could be better, and it's going to suffer without Max", only to realize that Chloe indeed is actually the best character from the series.

Something about learning more about Rachel and the knowledge of what was yet to come made it an incredibly emotional journey for me. It ended up making it into my top 25 games of the decade.

BTS was better than the original, easily. LIS had two key moments that were super powerful, at the ends of episodes 2 and 4, but a lot of it was nonsense or filler. BTS's writing was consistently strong, largely because of the dynamic between Chloe and Rachel, and I'd much rather listen to Chloe's thoughts and watch her actions than mousy Max.

LIS certainly should have been better. The premise of being able to rewind time has so many applications. There just weren't enough places where you could do that meaningfully, and then it evolved into other weird powers later on rather than sticking to what should have made it work. But because LIS takes the time to cultivate all these characters, it's that much more powerful when we see the continuation of them -- even if it is a prequel and therefore we know where these people end up. Simply seeing how Chloe changes from who she is during that gulf between her happy childhood with Max to the counter-culture defiant bitch she becomes is extremely rewarding.

BTS definitely deserves a playthrough, it's only 3 (3.5 if you include Farewell, but then you get to play as Max again if that's a selling point) episodes and is in many ways the superior experience.

Nah, it's fine. You couldn't have foreseen what SMFFFC would evolve into after you left. I did mostly enjoy it and I got to go out with a good final (perhaps the last good final based on the last couple years).

Bhe she is also a annoying, rebel teenager that I couldn't stand

Surprisingly Chloe is like the best of her friend group despite the 'rebel' front.

Max ghosted her and Rachel manipulated her, and Chloe basically lived for both of them.

I mean yeah pretty much all of the significant characters have some really undesirable quality except for Kate and William, but I think it makes them pretty real actually. I mean I guess the villains are like, almost cartoonishly over-the-top, but the traits they portray are real traits you'd find in a truly detestable person.

Not really!

I mean, BTS goes much deeper into fleshing it out, but LIS does a fine job.

The combination of her dad dying and then Max ghosting her at her lowest point warps her for sure, but the alternate timeline shows you "pure" Chloe. And all of the interactions with her throughout LIS shows that is still the same Chloe at the core.

Uh no? She's intentionally abrasive, and she really only softens her stance for Max and occasionally someone else. It's only through emotional manipulation that you are supposed to ultimately view her through a positive lens, and I say this as someone who liked the game and ultimately liked Chloe.

I didn't make this choice and only saw it in LPs but yeah this is not a great moment and completely contrasts with the way the alternate timeline is supposed to have preserved her original personality. Plus, even in a game that is supposed to fuck with you emotionally, that whole scene seemed particularly uncomfortable. That was the choice that took me the longest to make in the entire game. I legit threw down my controller and thought out loud for a good two minutes. Even though I knew Max was going to go back to the original timeline and it wasn't going to matter anyway.

As long as you save Kate. If you don't, it makes Chloe look even worse for reaming Max for answering a phone call from a suicidal person. She does show some sympathy to Max, but as a "sorry for your loss," not a "sorry for being a c***."

The phone call is not a good look for Chloe, but after having been ghosted for a few years once already I can see where the dread could come from. The fear of it all happening again.

If you really think Chloe is "likable" because she was a sweetheart until going through something traumatic, I think you need to reevaluate your definition of "likable." She's enjoyable as hell as a character, but, in the frame of the games, she is not a likable person.

Eh, KCF is basically right. She gets mad whenever Max doesn't do what she wants. I learned this because pretty much every plan Chloe came up with was dumb (and gameplay usually bore this out), so she was always getting mad at me for the choices I made, which didn't exactly endear me to her.

Rebel Chloe is a person that I would not like to associate with. If we were co-workers, I might appreciate her putting down of stupid people and occasionally enjoy shittalking with her, but otherwise wouldn't want to go near her and wouldn't even friend her on FB. That's not a likable person.

I think BtS is equal to LiS (meaning they're both tied for being the best game ever) and Chloe is the best character ever, so I like this topic!

BtS really impressed me with how well the new dev understood her character. Minor Ep1 spoilers The SMASH scene at the junkyard was amazing. Lesser writers would've had Chloe just break down and cry after Rachel left, but that isn't how Chloe processes things. She lashes out and breaks things. It was great.
