I still think the prequels weren't that bad.

Revenge of the Sith is a very solid Star Wars movie.
Attack of the Clones isn't THAT bad.
And Phantom Menace is alright.

TFA was mediocre AF and it might end up being the best in the sequel trilogy from the sound of things. This is very disappointing.

Prequels wouldn't have been nearly as bad if they were made in the 80s and there was a lot less CGI.

They also didn't completely silence the rest of the Star Wars universe like the Disney trilogy has.

Depends on this last movie.

As somebody who enjoyed the first two well enough, it's hard not to imagine episode 9 as a mess. I basically walked out of the theaters for 8 thinking "that was fun, but they are fucked making a satisfying conclusion to a trilogy after that." And based on some of these leaks... yikes.

Easily the prequels. They were bad, but at least fun. The new trilogy is just overall awful.

I'd say that so far the sequels are probably the better made films overall. But that really doesn't matter because the prequels are significantly more enjoyable.

I'll probably forget about the sequels, but I'll never forget movies as bad as the prequels.

Why is Rogue One so beloved?

Prequels were more imaginative and have a wider array of interesting characters and events, I'm going with them.

Okay so the first half is a little slow, but it's not too terrible. It has fun, entertaining characters, interesting worldbuilding, and a great story, especially the last half of the movie. Wow.

Lol yeah, they wouldnt have been so terrible if they werent what they were. Imagine if they had been good films that werent dog shit, then they wouldnt have been so awful.

The PT while flawed did have a story it wanted to tell, it was just executed badly.

With the ST however there is no plot/story at all which is very transparent with how the new movies have no direction or a clue on what they are doing.

Rogue One is loved because a plot is actually there and it knows the story it wants to tell.

Other than the nostalgia at the end.

TLJ was bad, and TROS is looking to be nearly as bad, but I would still say the sequels are easily better.

Main thing was it recontextualized things in the Star Wars universe in ways that add depth and address existing issues while remaining true to the spirit of the thing. The monk dude was exactly the kind of worldbuilding the series needed after E1, trying to bring mystery back into the Force. I loved how they even leave it ambiguous whether the Force even did anything or he just believed it did. Also filled in a minor plot hole (the opening Luke uses to kill the Death Star) with the OT in a surprisingly logical and believable way. Then it adds depth to Tarkin too with the backstory and the feud between him and Krennek over the Death Star. It overall just does a lot for the Star Wars universe as a whole.

But also:

Tone was killer. I was skeptical af about another dark edgy SW film after 2 and 3 but RO proved it can be done and can be great. And it didn't lose sight of its parent property in the midst of it. It still had the sarcastic droid, the "Mickey Mouse operation" feel, those nervous moments of panic when the plan starts unraveling and a lot of direct callbacks and homages that were overt enough to be noticed but recontextualized enough to not feel like a total ripoff.

The cinematography was pretty great. Stuff like the scale shots on the Death Star were effective af. The scales of the explosions, too, and the way they actually use that time in logical and emotionally impactful ways was really nice.

Rogue One was extraordinarily dull outside of the last 40 minutes or so. The only character I remember giving even a single shit about was the pilot, and I don't think I could even tell you why that was.

Episode 1 is an abomination. So is 2. 3 is just not very good.

7 is okay, 8 is a pretty bad film, Rogue One is pretty good and I've no desire to see Solo.
