I thought just getting emails was enough to keep it going -- which it had been in the past -- but I guess I needed to log in as well. =x

Not 100% sure of everything I lost, although it includes old site registration info, some contact information, and pretty much all of my email correspondence between 1999 or 2000 (when I switched from my old email provider) to maybe 2006 or 2007 (when I started using gmail regularly).

Only realized it because I was trying to figure out which email my Staples account was connected to and it's not my primary Outlook or primary gmail. Of course, that's not it either. I know I've ordered online from them, so I'm starting to suspect that they deleted my account due to inactivity. Just not sure how to figure out what my loyalty rewards number is.

Granted, to some extent, I might be better off with much of that stuff deleted since Yahoo seems to have a network-wide security breach every few years that exposes everybody. This way it won't be clear what accounts are connected to it.

EDIT: Looking at my gmail again, apparently I forwarded a Staples offer from my ymail to my gmail so, at one point, I probably had my account through it? What a pain, though. If only I could enter my phone number (since it still registers my account) to see what my password is.

Sucks, that reminds I should sign in to my hotmail(lulz) account again soon, it's been about a year. Gotta keep it alive for some things.

Also weird but worth mentioning: Apparently Staples doesn't take Paypal. Trying to think of any other major retailer's website that doesn't take Paypal, but coming up blank.

At any rate, was just buying a cheap Chromebook for when I don't feel like lugging around a laptop but want some functionalities that are hard to replicate on a phone. Still need to find a good laptop deal and hoping that Cyber Monday will have something.

Oo

I can't even remember what my old hotmail login was.

Wow, I completely forgot about Hotmail. I had an email with them, haven't checked it since probably 2010.

I'm afraid of the day yahoo mail goes down, because well...yahoo hasn't been doing so hot for like a decade now.

So damn many of my various online accounts are based on a yahoo email... It was my first email address, and then later on I kept using it b/c I figured any site I signed up to would bombard me w/ spam, and my yahoo email became my "spam collector" email address.

That'd be dozens of different website accounts to migrate to a new email address...and a lot of them are accounts I barely use and forget exist...until I need them.

I use Yahoo mail. I don't think they're going down any time in the foreseeable future.

When I logged in, I think it mentioned the service was owned by Verizon or something so I imagine it'll probably be around for at least a few years and then eventually folded into something else.

Verizon bought it about two years ago. They rolled it under the same administration division as AOL.

They've said they have zero intention to dissolve them or rebrand them, so it's entirely possible they'll still be around for years. Especially since they're some of the few viable alternatives to Gmail for people who (rightly) don't like or trust Google.

It's nice Verizon says that for now.

Verizon already killed AOL Instant Messenger and Tumblr

I hope they wouldn't kill yahoo mail, and don't see why they would, but it's Verizon so who knows?

To be fair, by the time they offed AIM there were about 3 people in the entire world left still using it, to the point where nearly everyone's response to AIM getting shut down was "Wait, AIM still existed?"

As for Tumblr, it still exists. And no, "Verizon made it worse!" really isn't a valid argument, because Tumblr was a festering wound begging for a mercy killing long before Verizon owned it (and "Hey, maybe 33% of the site's content shouldn't be porn" was probably a pretty understandable call to make for any ownership company - and was also a problem the site was dealing with before Verizon bought it). And they've since sold it off anyway..

With Yahoo mail (and even Yahoo search and other Yahoo features), the installed user-base is pretty significant, and Verizon isn't likely to make any major changes because they don't really need to, so there's very little motivation for them to sell off or gut anything.
