Seeing this reminded me of a review once. While it's not quite the same thing it's definitely a glimpse into the mind of some that do cheap out.

The review was for one of those small power strip style UPS' with a very low mAh, think it was literally intended for network gear only. It was under 60 or so bucks iirc. Guy bought it and complained it was a complete rip off and how he should sue the company because he put his 4000 dollar beast of a gaming pc (his literal words) and it kept cutting out because it couldn't provide enough power and might have damaged the PC.

You'd think if you're gonna blow all that money on a pc, you'd feed it with an actual modest UPS and not one literally meant for a router/modem and maybe a tv for a few mins.

i put a corsair vengeance 750W PSU into this thing... how is that "cheaping out"

i should point out the fire was centered on the connections to the HDD

From the power input presumably...

And the HDD was fine before?
Sounds like the PSU power out connector was broken.
But that is still odd.

Decent PSU so Im surprised. Does your house have a history of electrical surges or issues?

I use a UPS now to just help smooth it out now that I have a decent rig.

Are you sure it is smoother?
Those are meant for power outages I thought.

A surge is a bit different.
Everyone should have a surge protector.

And also, the UPS's are generators I think.
I wondering what kind of sinewave they put out.
I never thought about that until now.

I'm not an expert on this but my understanding was if you have potentially irregular electricity, the artificial sinewave generated by a decent UPS will help reduce risk of issues with your PSU. It's not really an issue for me but just something I remember reading and thought may as well invest in protecting my $5k desktop and prevent data corruption if power suddenly goes out.

I think what you wanted was a surge protector.
Unless you experience a lot of power outages.

And as for the sine wave thing.
It's hard to find a good Pure Sine Wave generator, or converter..which is what this is.
So I would imagine, they are not putting out a pure sine wave. idk...

Either way, unless you lose power all the time, a surge protector is probably what you need.

I wanted a UPS for the uninterrupted power aspect should someone trip the cable or the power goes out. My wife unplugged my NAS once to plug in her hairdryer and it took forever to rebuild the RAID.

I don't use RAM caching for writing to my SSDs (my PC seems fast enough) but I'd rather not have the risk of data loss or corruption just over something trivial like a power outage.

As for pure sine wave generator, I just remember reading that a decent UPS will help but if you're the kind of person who needs something very specific for your use case, then good luck as I'm sure it won't come cheap.

Ya, Only bring it up, because I've done some stuff with solar, just for fun.
And I've used both.. You can hear the difference between sines by listening to a box fan.

Sorry, I didn't mean to derail the topic..

Either way, I wish you smooth sailing!!

I have a surge protector but not a ups.

Looks like one of the gold connectors on the SATA port was fucked. So when I turned on the computer my SATA cable shorted out

Was it a Molex-Sata cable? Because there's a saying: Molex to Sata, lose your data!

This. Were you using a molex to sata cable, OP?
