Good Creepypasta: "I found this Pokemon cartridge at the flea market, it had a black case and no version name. I took it home and the game was acting really funky, the regular start of the game was all different and the dialogue was vague and creepy. I played through the campaign and a bunch of weird things happened, and when the game came to its inevitably spooky conclusion my save game deleted itself. I think it could have been a ROMhack, it was really something else. I played through it a couple of times, and it always had the same outcome. I lost it years ago though - has anyone else played something like this? I actually kind of miss it."

Bad Creepypasta: "I found a version of Pokemon Red at a flea market, and I got home and put it in my Gameboy Advance SP. It was just like Pokemon Red, except the screen said "Pokemon Bloodred Edition" and Charizard's cry was on loop and distorted. The game was fine up until Lavender town - I spoke to the guy who said there was a white hand on my shoulder, but instead of ending the dialogue, the game put me in a Pokemon battle! And the opponent was a hyperrealistic hand with broken fingers, with bones sticking out of the fingers and blood all over it. It made me want to vomit. The battle theme was the Lavender town theme in reverse, and it kept getting louder and louder until I blacked out. The first thing I remember after that was my mom shaking me in her arms, crying hysterically - I had gone to the kitchen, gotten a knife and stood in front of our bathroom sink. She said I was about to cut my throat, but she knocked the knife out of my hands! And that's why I don't buy Pokemon games at the flea market any more."

I like mundane, down to earth Creepypasta stories that could be something graphic, but could also be something mundane. Dude gets a Pokemon game, there's a ghost instead of a starter, you kill other trainers, and at the end the ghost turns on your player character. It only affects the game. Maybe someone tampered with ROMhacking and made this one of a kind cartridge - that's cool to think about. That sort of thing triggers my desire to get to the bottom of things, it entertains that part of me that wants to believe that there's some guy who leaves a one of a kind ROMhack lying around at a flea market. It's dumb, but it's dumb fun.

The second one is a bunch of edgy try-hard bullshit. No, Connor, you didn't nearly kill yourself after playing Pokemon Bloodred version. You took the framework of a spooky story and you word-vomited a bunch of schlock, and you somehow got people around you to spread it as a "true spooky story" despite it being a clear load of horseshit.

That's what I don't get about creepypasta. It all ends with like a cult, or some other defining cinematic moment like in a book or movie, instead of capturing something fucked up or off-kilter that could realistically be a part of the real world. I love stories that are just like "I heard some fucked up shit in the middle of the night, it was unlike any other animal I've ever heard and I'm used to raccoons making horrifying noises in the middle of the night, I never saw it but it haunts me to this day". I couldn't give less of a shit about a story where that horrifying monster gets into your room and you have to scramble around and be careful to not get attacked, like a Don't Breathe scenario, and at the end you have a near brush with death until the monster escapes and leaves you permanently scarred for life. There's no mystery there, there's just another shitty dime-a-dozen YA horror anthology piece that everyone's seen before.

The best part of a creepypasta is the abnormal shakeup in a mundane society, that registers to someone before they live the rest of their lives in doubt as to what exactly that was meant to be. It's mundane items, or exceptionally weird instances that happen and just go away. It's not a 7th grader's poor rendering of a killer video game or a creature feature that nearly kills you.

Ben Drowned started off great, turned into something ridiculous and stupid when it got too big for its own good, so I know what you mean.

A good creepy pasta should be like a good supernatural story.

There is creepy, unknown stuff that happens in real life and it's hard for people to explain what happened.

A creepy-pasta is essentially an imitation of these real-life scary stories.

Much like a real scary story, it should allow for a generous amount of room for doubt but also enough evidence to suggest that it actually did (or could) happen.

I agree that try-hard creepypasta is garbage.

Video game creepy pastas are consistently the worst. But yeah, the ghost cartridge was probably the only one I read that was any good.

the version I read would have been better if it didnt spell out everything though. And then I realized it was all the Pokmon I killed along the way or something.
