Since Disney gobbled up Fox, they've started quietly tucking away a whole bunch of classic movies into the infamous Disney Vault. These include the Alien series, The Omen, The Fly, The Princess Bride, Moulin Rouge, and Fight Club. Other Fox movies that Disney now owns that could meet the same fate include Miracle on 34th Street, The Sound of Music, Die Hard, Home Alone, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and thousands more.

I think I'll go back to the cord. I'd much rather cable/satellite than streaming services that support these practices.
I don't have much room for my movie collection, but that'll only grow.
I like to own stuff, rather than pay someone to allow me the opportunity to watch it.

They'll periodically be "unvaulted," presumably. It's a way to drive up demand without having to actually create anything new, especially in a digital world where the unvaulting process just consists of copy+pasting the movie file into the "available for streaming" folder.

the movies being vaulted don't affect streaming.

it's literally just physical copies and theatrical releases.

You can bet it won't be long before they're only available from Disney's own streaming service and nobody else's.

Vaulting is absolutely going to affect streaming. At no point will Disney's entire library of content be available on Disney+. They'll be taking stuff down and putting stuff up as they see fit to keep people interested, exactly as they do with their physical movie libraries. The precedent is there for such practices because stuff appears and disappears from Netflix all the time, but that's because Netflix has to buy temporary distribution licenses, not because they're manipulating supply and demand.

Why would they do that for movies they didn't originally own?

Is Bob Iger gonna go to every Target and forcefully take all the $5 Fox Animation triples packs cluttering up shelves?

You can't create artificial scarcity for something that wasn't scarce in the first place.

Anyways this isn't about Disney removing movies for sales, it's about theater screening old movies.

Disney usually charges higher exhibitions fees for their classics and some theaters can't afford it.

Can you imagine a modern Disney sequel to Fight Club?

They'd probably make the main character an imaginary rabbit named Harvey or something

Pretty much. The supply is already so diluted that the vault won't have the same impact.

...it means exactly what i said it means.

they're vaulted, and thus, wont be making any new copies. not that they're hard to find as it is, regardless.

and then when they do make new copies, they will have been removed from the vault, thus not being vaulted anymore.
