LOL!

Well, from the rest of the article linked to in the Tweet, at least one of those states was California because... well, of course it was California.
https://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/dublin-11-19/index.html

So that's one state ID'd, five to go. (Granted, they might not list the states *because* they want people to be cautious and by labeling some, those in others might think themselves unaffected.)

I think cooking the meat gets rid of the salmonilla though, so I guess they are pretty safe in CA right now.

Yeah, but again, that makes the warning absolutely useless.

"Hey, you know that disease we've known about for at least a hundred years, that most people today have been warned about for most of their entire lives, that's never really stopped being a thing? Yeah, it's still a thing. And may or may not be in some food you may or may not buy in places you may or may not live, so, you know, keep acting like it's a thing, just like you already should have been ever since you first started interacting with food."

The general warning is useless because the general warning has already been a thing for decades, and saying the odds of getting it are slightly higher now is kind of meaningless because almost no one knows what the odds of getting it were in the first place. Whereas a more specific warning might be more useful because it could put people in high-risk areas on higher alert, but as is, most people won't change behavior at all because they'll assume the vagueness of the warning means it isn't all that important. Especially in a 24-7 news cycle where we've already moved on to the next story 15 minutes ago.

(The worst part is, they DO list the states where the cases were reported, if you're willing to tunnel down through multiple layers yourself. Which 99.9999% of people aren't going to do. So it's not like they have any real motivation to keep the states secret, they're just shitty at conveying pertinent info.)

Exactly. It's a widespread thing and may very well not be limited to the states that it has currently popped up in. And by listing the states it may leave people thinking "Oh, we're safe. We don't live in those states." They want everyone to be extra careful. Even though forngrpind beef, that's what they recommend all the time anyway.

Then again, I work with a guy who basically grills his steak until the outside changes color and the inside is still dripping red, so IDK.

Steak and ground beef are two entirely different things.

The cooking problem remains.

If you don't cook something until it's done, you might get sick from it being contaminated. That's not a problem exclusive to beef.

A steak will only have contaminates on the exterior. Ground beef can have the contaminates throughout.

Yea of course the state that produces as much beef as half of the rest of the US would be affected.

Untrue. Different meats require different internal temps when cooked to be safe. Steak is one of the lowest needed (so you can get it rare and be fine), while stuff like chicken is the highest. And other stuff falls somewhere in the middle, like ground beef

Indeed. Unless you've ground it yourself, you always want to cook ground meat to 165, especially given the potential to have it contaminated with cerebrospinal fluid if the butcher's careless working around the spine (this is why ground beef is one of the biggest concerns during Mad Cow outbreaks). Steaks, on the other hand, are going to be safe inside, so you can have them rarer without as much consequence.

Unfortunately, the prions that cause "Mad Cow" are not affected by cooking. Prions are rather tough proteins and the only way to render them inert would be to incinerate the meat, which is not good eats.

And it doesn't matter who grinds it, you still need to cook ground beef thoroughly. That's because when you grind meat, any bacteria which were on the outside will now be mixed in with the inside.
