They essentially took the remainder of the manga, which based on the pace of the original series would have taken over 100 episodes to adapt, and crammed it into one final 26-episode season... and it was really good. The pacing was so much better than the snail's pace of the original series, and it gave a satisfying conclusion to the franchise as a whole. That tends to erase good feelings associated with most shows. I never finished the series after the hiatus. I figured it was best to leave things as they were and end on a positive not. I saw one episode about seven or eight years ago and it struck me that this is a show for which it might be best to keep my fond memories and not try to revisit them. I do still keep Miroku as an avatar though. In hindsight, he's guilty of sexual assault for groping women without consent.
