Same :(

I only met my dad twice. Once at an age where I was too young to remember anything and again when I was around 6 or 7.

Yeah

It's great these days but it was a mixed bag when I was a kid.

I got the discipline I needed and sometimes tje guidance I needed but I also got a lot of belittlement and yelling, which still affect me today.

Haven't seen him in 14ish years.
Hurt me, and my mom, had anger issues.
Divorce, stopped visiting him after a while.

Grandad is my father figure, raised me a lot.

Naw.

He had a massive stroke that left him completely paralyzed on the left side of his body when I was 7, then he had a massive heart attack that killed him when I was 13.

Yeah

He forced me to take out student loans that I didn't want and left me to dry with them. He also took out credit cards in my name and maxed them. My credit is probably forever destroyed

Your credit takes about a year to fix once the negative things on it have fallen off. It takes about 7 years for negative things to fall off unless you pay them off, then it will be sooner.

I'm always envious when I hear about people born to couples that have been together for a long time and counting.

My parents weren't even married. From what I can piece together, they were just hooking up a bunch and now they hate each other. C'est la vie.

He's still around.

He's always been mean spirited, selfish, and controlling. He saw his family as tools to used and throw away when not needed. If we weren't actively benefitting him in some way, he was punishing us. He always needed things to be exactly how he wanted and we were to blame if things weren't.

He hated me most though. I never really got a clear answer as to why. He did finally admit a few years ago that he abused me because it made him feel tough. So yeah, I was beaten, threatened with death, constantly told I was worthless and he wanted me dead just so he could feel tough. I was told almost daily how happy he'd be if he came home to find me dead, that he'd piss on my grave and dance as he left. He loved my brother though, he could do no wrong. He'd play with my brother, and take him out, and was always going on about how proud he was of him. Then he'd turn around get pushed that he saw I was in the same room as him and get threatened until I just went to my room. So naturally I became jealous of him being loved, and not me(mom was afraid to show me affection out if fear that he'd hurt her if she did). So I grew up being taught that I'm worthless, and that no one could ever care for me, and that I didn't even deserve that anyway and that I'd just grow old alone then die.

So, yeah, not great. That's not even mentioning the worst things he's done, I won't ever say on here what it was, but it was bad and he should've been in prison. The other things like when literally tried to murder me I can talk about. He sometimes claims that I owe him my life because he gave me life, and allowed me to live. He uses that, and threats of violence against my dog and family to get me to do what he wants still.

He's been treating me a bit better recently, since my brother got married and cut us all out of his life. That hurt my dad's feelings and in retaliation I became the default "favorite" for once. Sucks that I'm only being treated as a person as revenge against my brother, but it is what it is.

It's no wonder I get so jealous seeing other people being loved, and feel so worthless myself. It's been deeply ingrained into my mind... The worst part is that so far he's been right. I haven't amounted to anything. I haven't found anyone who cares for me, and most likely won't. I am everything he said I was, and worse, and knowing that just makes everything seem pointless.

My dad passed earlier this year on February 23 at 8:05 pm. But he's still here with me and made my whole existence possible and I am now a father myself. I love my dad, even though we didn't get along alot of the time. Had a good head on his shoulders and didn't let the pressures of life get to him like he had earlier on in his life.

That's life though. You'll have to deal with death sometime in your life. My dad knew of his problem, which was in his brain in a highly sensitive spot to get to so he opted to not have the surgery. I got all his belongings with me and the last mail he received from the VA hospital was on February the 7th, saying he needed to come in ASAP because things weren't looking good.

What's strange thought is he survived a house fire at his sisters in December, then two months later the stroke hit. He was unhooked and he immediately started the death rattle. Disturbing to hear but it's normal, his body struggled and struggled. One minute pale as a ghost, the next full of color. Lasted from 12pm to 8:05 doing that and I was there for it all. Then I got the bill for his 1 week stay and for the surgery we tried to do to save him. Half a million dollars can you believe that.

Now I clearly don't fully understand the situation but in light of said legend, I would consider the possibility that he may not have been able to--or may believe he wouldn't have been able to--visit your home without causing considerable drama because of something that evidently went down decades ago.

You always think you understand how your family works until one day you're forced to realize you don't. For example, I didn't realize until I was in my 20's that my brother and my dad don't get along in the slightest and never had. And I mean, looking back, I dunno how on earth I missed it, but I guess a combination of being shielded on account of being the youngest and normalcy bias kept me from ever thinking about it.
