They probably figure they're more time-sensitive and easily lost than walk-in customers.

on that backed up taco bell day people actually walked out when they waited too long.
wait time was 20 mins on food. normally it's 5 maybe 10 on super busy days.

Do they?

Over here, drive-thru customer just get served as they come.

edit: ...I think I misunderstood the topic question.

pods, the time it takes for someone in the drive-thru to get their order, is super important to pretty much every fast food joint. it's essential that everybody makes "green" pods, because then it means the workers are fast and efficient.

What's so weird about it?

One politely asks for your name then jots down your order. Next you drive up to the collections chick and pay with your card, then finally get your food and leave the establishment. All within one or three minutes tops.

I guess it's just my Chick Fil A but walking in, ordering to go, and walking out with my food takes me about 30 seconds every time.

I pretty much never use drive thrus. They're supposed to be faster, but the lines are usually so much longer than inside where there's only a few people. In my experience, going inside is much quicker and my order is right near 100% of the time.

Also apparently Chick-fil-A has the slowest drive thru time at 5 minutes and 23 seconds from the speaker window to receiving your food:

I haven't noticed this. They seem to be equally efficient regardless of whether I go inside or through the drive thru.

I went to Taco Bell one day on my lunch at work. I drove there, went inside and had placed my order in 15 minutes. I didn't get my food for almost 25 minutes (now at 40 minutes of my hour lunch, and I still needed to eat and drive back), and then they still got almost everything wrong. I was mad and wanted a refund, but I didn't even have time anymore because of how long they took to make my order. Just threw it away and bounced.

I think it was due to the Taco Bell just reopening with new staff (it was closed for a few months for a remodel), but I didn't go back for a long time.

It's because drive-thru orders are timed and reported to corporate overlords. At the places with good employees they can do orders concurrently and it isn't an issue. At places with slower employees, or less staff, they might ignore dine-in customers for the first 8 minutes after an order is placed just to 'push cars through' in order to make time goals.

Taco Bell is notorious among all fast food places for screwing up orders. You always have to double check everything.

As said, drive thru times are typically the times judged by the higher ups, so we push those out first. Personally I try to knock out drive but typically go by who's been waiting longest and knock them out. Like 3 drive/3 done/etc

I mean, if the drive-thru is one lane with between a curb and the building, it's hard to exactly "lose" those customers

Drive-thru customers are given priority because they're typically viewed as being in a hurry(lets be honest though, not really).

Still, it's time of someone willing to come in, sit down, and eat vs time of someone who is going to either want or need to get the hell out right away.

I went to dine in and after 2 mins of waiting they came to me and apologized for food taking long.

Then the manager brought my food 2 mins later and apologized for the wait.

I haven't noticed this. Whenever the line's long, I just go inside and I'm out way before some of the cars get through.

If the line's long inside, I order on the app and get my food even sooner.
