One) this movie was building up to the "birth" of the Joker, but we never get to see him do anything. It would be like ending a Spider-Man origin story right after catching Uncle Ben's killer. Two) the movie could have benefited from showing how truly monstrous the Joker really is. Besides the one woman, he didn't kill anyone other than who he had been personally wronged by. A five year old with a bum leg could break out of there. :P My only problem with the woman, is that the scene was understated, compared to the brutality expressed with the people that wronged him. I would still make the case that, as an obstacle to his freedom, it doesn't present him as anything more than a standard criminal. It's also a lot more understated than his other kills. Killing someone who was completely innocent, and completely removed from his situation, I think is what I was looking for. The same way Frankenstein's creature ~~targeted the doctor's fiancee and family.
