Hes being a bit pretentious but hes not entirely wrong.

On the other hand, the MCU owns what it is and has never really presented itself as anything other than fun event movies.

Just like any medium, movies can be a lot of different things. You're not gonna pick up an Iron Man comic and compare it to Anna Karenina and you shouldn't be comparing an Iron Man movie to Taxi Driver. They aren't high art but they can be undeniably entertaining.

Here's the full quote btw

I dont see them. I tried, you know? But thats not cinema, Scorsese told Empire. Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isnt the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.

I see where you're coming from, but Doom was deceptively deep. Sure, there's nothing particularly noteworthy about blasting demons in space, but the skill involved is. Doom is just as much ballet as it is heavy metal.

Can you tell me what's "deceptively deep" about the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

While I agree in principle yada yada maybe he's being pretentious or whatever but damn, you say not every movie needs to be the godfather as if this is one or two movies

It's absolutely saturating the market and if you happen to find superhero movies formulaic and childish it can seem like its hurting the industry

I'd say the MCU combined is definitely cinema, avengers infinity war was really captivating and compelling, endgame was decent too. Scorseses isn't giving enough credit to marvel for what they accomplished.

He's right about what it's not trying to do but that doesn't really make it not cinema in my opinion. This is a ridiculous gate criteria that excludes cinematic landmarks like 2001 Space Odyssey.

I dunno I think acting like they're the most emotionally resonant thing is cinema is more edgey than saying they're not.

I love Marvel movies. They get me hyped. But they're popcorn entertainment at the end of the day. It's really not hard to understand why Scorcese doesn't relate to a bunch of men who solve their problems by entering robot suits or using super abilities.

So every action movie is the same by this vague nothingness.

Next you'll tell me you're sick of so many video games being "defeat enemies until you get to the end credits"

Where did I say any of that stuff.

I can talk about Marvel movies until the cows come home but when people start whining about Endgame not winning Academy Awards (which was a topic earlier this week), that critically acclaimed directors don't like them or start calling other movies elitist or not as good I have to start questioning things a bit.
