37 y/o Christopher Bergan flew all the way from NORWAY to Florida to surprise his father in law for his birthday and arrived to the state late that evening.

When he knocked on the door at around 11:30pm, he hid in the bushes and waited for him. When his father in law opened the door to see who it was, Christopher JUMPED out of the bushes and said "happy birthday" and that's when he was SHOT DEAD with a single bullet to the chest!!

Richard Dennis was the father in law who shot and killed his son in law and police WILL NOT charge him as they call it a "horrible accident"

Christopher is married to his daughter and has a son and lives in Norway.

Dennis said he was unware that Bergan was a arriving that day when he turned on the porch light and saw Bergan "leapt out of the shadows" making a growling sound as he emerged before yelling happy birthday and he shot him at that point.

Dennis did admit that one of his relatives had come to his home and did the SAME THING where they got into a verbal beef over the prank and told that relative to leave as it seems to be a common theme among his family..

The sheriff said no charges are being laid saying "it never should have happened" and said "If anybody who is religious out there, you need to pray for his family. I can't imagine what they're going through..it's horrible"

Neighbors were shocked as Bergan was married to the man's daughter who lived in Florida before they moved to Norway.

Friends of Bergan are blaming america's gun culture as one friend said "My childhood buddy, Chris Bergan, was killed instantly by a family member. He had no idea he was shooting his son in law. I'm conviced gun culture has everything to do with this tragedy. Please think about the way you talk about guns and consider dropping the gun pride. Teach your kids they are tools, not toys"

Christopher and Dennis' daughter -

Surprising gun owners late at night seems like a stupid thing to do, although I also wonder the in-law made the surprise-story to get away with murder.

It's unreasonable to expect that somebody wouldn't act defensively when getting surprised at night, with or without a gun.

Maybe teach your kids not to hide in the bushes and jump out at people at 11:30 at night as well.

While I don't condone the guy for jumping out of the bushes at 11p.m. (which would scare the h..l out of me), turning and firing on something that you can't see isn't a smart move either. I mean he could have easily hit the air conditioner or a power line with the bullet (depends on where either are located), which would've either started a fire or caused an explosion that would've done a lot of damage (if not killed people as well). This country's overemphasis on 'the bad guys out to get you if you're not armed' scenario gets people so keyed up that they have to get a gun 'for protection'; then end up with all these 'horrible accidents' like the 2 year old accidentally shooting his mother dead when he reached into her handbag, etc. People, media included, need to put stuff in its proper perspective instead of hyping everything in order to sell guns and fear throughout the country.

Dude shot his gun without even knowing what he was shooting at.

He was shooting at a guy surprising him when he opens the door to his house, that's a legitimate case to kill in self-defense in the UK.

You're under no obligation to risk your life when a threat presents itself.

If you think you or someone else is in danger then don't open the door and call the police. You have a gun, shelter in place and don't expose yourself.

You don't know if it's danger until you open the door. As it happened, it was a guy ambushing him in the middle of the night, a perfectly valid threat to suppress. He wasn't shooting at his son in law just standing there, he was attacking a pouncing predator.

It was a surprise. Get jumped on by someone, and you're gonna react in some way. Some people will punch you right in the face. An armed person might shoot. The father in law had absolutely no fault in it, it was a legitimate self defense reaction.

As for the other part, it's called being prepared. It's not that late at night, could be some emergency or a lost pizza boy, or a robber/murderer. Depending on your hood, it's best to be cautious. You're not gonna leave your gun in the closet, open the door, then go run back to your closet, load it and THEN use it.
