I promise you a cis person never thinks about it.

Like. You literally *promised* that you fully grasp how cis people think. Yet you claim you aren't cis.

If that's not the most arrogant thing.

When I first read that cis people dont fantastize about being the opposite gender it was such a revelation to me. It wasnt the only thing but it made me remember all the times I almost reached the point of knowing like it was like unlocking something. It made me feel so stupid for not knowing sooner. When I would use my imagination growing up often I would be female nearly half the time and stop to correct myself to make it a guy, I would play the female in video games and justify it to myself, I would think sometimes about how much Id want breasts. I only admitted to myself I was trans a little over a month ago so Im still adjusting but after I realized it seemed like Id always known and was just keeping it from myself if that makes sense. I wasnt trying to disparage cis people, I wasnt even thinking about them, I just wanted people to know that if you have thoughts like I did and fantasize about being the opposite gender you probably arent cis. It just seems so obvious to me now that Im not cis when I wouldnt have even considered it last year. But looking back my life makes so much sense now. Other trans people I spoke to had very similar experiences about how theyd talk about these thoughts to their cis friends and theyd react with confusion and disgust and it seemed like it was very common because it matched up with my childhood experience. I even used the qualifier that you wouldnt be 100% cis, maybe you could still be 99% cis and have thoughts of being the opposite gender still, its a spectrum, I was just trying to say that you may fall somewhere in the middle away from it. I didnt mean to imply that cis people dont have an imagination just that it doesnt typically involve them being the opposite gender. I just feel like its too late for me and I wanted to spread what I thought I knew when I saw experiences who reminded me slightly of me before. Its very hard to admit to yourself that you might be. I didnt know it would be cause this. Im very sorry, Im not very smart or anything I just thought it made a lot of sense to me and I hoped it would with someone else and help them find themselves faster.

Well, this topic has certainly taken an interesting turn for me.

To me personally, labels should be helpful in defining yourself and meeting people who you would be interested in. If it's become restricting instead, don't bother with it.

I don't really agree that cis and trans is a spectrum - I don't think it's really 'one or the other' either, I just think it's more complicated than that, and there's a lot of different ways to express one's gender, to think about it and compartmentalize it, but at the end of the day describing myself as anything other than "cis", at least as I am today, would feel quite disingenuous. I'm certainly not trans! I think most trans people would be baffled at best and appalled at worst if I tried to claim such a label for myself without actually living the experience I think it'd be kind of offensive really.

I do agree that for a lot of people having these thoughts is often just a precursor and people definitely shouldn't feel pressured into suppressing these feelings, either out of fear of coming out or simply out of a feeling of "oh, no, it couldn't be me." I do think cis/straight people should remain openminded too, because, well, nobody really knows everything about themselves and people can change over time. But speaking as a cis guy I do think people need to be allowed to have doubts! It's totally possible to have really deep questions about your gender for a long time and then still comfortably and confidently assert yourself as cis. I'm a lot more comfortable as a man than I was 15 years ago because I allowed myself to express doubt - entertaining transness has legit made me more comfortable as cis.

the way you phrased it at first made it sound like you meant if its a thing you thought about at all ever, youre definitely not cis, but your personal experience seems to be that you thought about it like all the time, which I, and I assume turbo too, am definitely not doing.
I dont think the passing consideration of what its like to be something different from yourself is indicative of anything other than general curiosity. Ive never actually felt like I should be a woman.

anyway what does being 99% cis even mean, like how rigidly do you have to define male and female for that concept to work?

oh but also you really dont have to apologize, its clear that you meant well by the suggestion. I dont take any offense.

I think the issue is not usually whether or not the label feels restrictive to you, but how the label restricts you in the mind of others.

For someone like the earlier mentioned "straight but I'd hook up with a guy" type for example, if he just tells people he is straight then most not rapey guys aren't going to try to hook up with him, so it's restricting him from something he would consider in most people's minds. But if he says he is bi, he is giving the impression to many that he would consider men and women equally, which seems untrue, so the label isn't really useful. In addition, tons of people make assumptions like "bi people don't really exist" or "he must be secretly gay" etc.

Basically, I'd say that labels are almost always not useful because everything means something different to other people and sometimes are just blatantly untrue things people define themselves as for other reasons (ex: in the closet or cultural or religious or family concerns). Someone might feel comfortable saying they are gay to their friends, but absolutely not comfortable saying it to their parents for example.

More useful information can just be gathered from contextual interaction. Ex: if you are a man using Grindr, you are probably willing to sleep with a man. If you are at a gay club and flirting with men, it doesn't really matter if you define yourself as gay, you are clearly willing to have sex with a man. If you are at a party and flirting with a man, you are probably willing to have sex with a man. However, if you are just going out with friends to have fun, it doesn't matter what your sexuality is because that isn't relevant.

In conclusion burn down all labels I demand label anarchy

To answer honestly, I'm probably like 75/25 straight. I'm definitely more attracted to women but the "gay side" is there lul. Probably not enough to actually do anything with a guy. But then I was also labelled as "gay" by several people growing up, probably because I was more emotional than an average boy and was intetested in "the arts". So that may have fucked with my head somewhat.
