so what you're saying is that the act of rapping is not the same as the act of singing and is therefore not musical in and of itself based on those 3 criteria. That's fair, but that's not what ben dover shapiro was saying. he was saying that the rap genre of music was actually not music at all.

@FighterStreet2 is trying to say that the rapping itself isn't music, not that what's typically referred to as "rap" or "hip hop" isn't music. Nowadays, "rap" and "hip hop" are used interchangeably and people typically don't just listen to a guy rapping over a rhythm with no melody or harmony to accompany it. Ben knows this, which is why we're right to call him out on his claim.

I've always thought this, and there are a few exceptions. I don't wanna get too much into word games whether or not it's music, but if it is music, it's usually bad music. It's the old "those who can't do, teach..." those who can't sing, rap. Often to sampled material made by other people, so the "creative" process there tends to scrape bottom. Not saying the end result is always bad. It just takes less effort.

whether it be the Beastie Boys telling critics to shut the f*** up or 2Pac saying shut the f*** up, Eminem, Kendrick... the sentiment is the same.

I see that a lot in political arguments when somebody has a bad opinion and nothing to back it up, do it doesn't surprise me that this is the main defense of someone who got slammed by the public for putting out bad music. The lack of talent with debate skills and lyrics, and tryhard fails at edginess to make up for it, only complement the lack of musical talent.

Ben took on the violin or whatever, how the hell does he have this opinion with a musical education behind him?

I suppose it could lead to a more discerning ear and appreciation for what's good vs what's not. Or just elitism. How many of the upper crust go into Uncle Phil mode and kick out poor DJ Jazzy Jeff?

I have to wonder if he doesn't count jazz as music since it doesn't follow "traditional" rules.

Oh man, that is a whole nother bone of contention with me, and I'm not just talking one genre. Because it was like...the scene was operating on all cylinders, only to fall so far once gangsters got attention for rapping about hoes and killing people. It went from the ceiling to rock bottom, so it's not just smaller bad music thing or even a question of unhealthy behavior. How much marketing, funding, opportunity was drawn away from talented artists over the years and sent into the hands of utter embarrassments?

This is the best the right can do for "public intellectuals"

Compared to the media holding up rappers as their "intellectuals," it's not even a close competition for Ben to win out on that one.

It sounds very crazy. Like saying anything with an instrument solo isn't music because it's just the melody and rhythm and has zero harmony. Or anything with a drum solo because there's literally zero melody and harmony during that portion.

One would also be saying that most early music that only consisted of the melody and rhythm to begin with are no longer music.

In other words, that "three part" thing is pretty much bullshit when it comes to defining what is and isn't music. It classifies the three major parts of a musical piece, but has zero to do with definition.

the human voice has pitch, and we change pitch frequently while we talk. there are people who can actually identify the pitches you make when you speak. we literally create melodies while we talk.
