It was one episode long (battle started midway of the previous episode and ended somehow at the middle of this episode) and 3 on 3
Where are the times it used to be 6 on 6, three episodes long?
It wasn't Kanto or Unova leagues bad, but it was pretty weak
Also how can you say the animation looks great when you have that Lycanroc "biting" on Stone Edge...what the hell was that

Ash victory was also super anticlimatic and the way he reacted to it was dumb as hell. "I won?" yeah shit you did

This battle ended with a minute and a half to go in this episode.

Ash vs Gary was the most build up EVER, and that was also about an episode and a half, and ended and had the next battle LITERALLY start alread in progress at the end of that episode.

So please screw off with this complaining just to complain.

The only league they ever actually did right was Unova, and even that ended like crap.

This was fine, awesome, and lets be real, cathartic.

Was it perfect, no.

Greninja 100% should have been Champion.

But it was great. And overhated for the sake of it

Unova was the only league they've done right? That's a take I've never heard before.

Placement aside... its the only one that didnt continue after the climax that had been built toward.

All the others went on too long after it had already achieved what it needed.

The only exception to that being Kanto... where for some inexplicable reason Gary lost before even getting to the top rounds. So thats even worse.

Maybe if they want to focus on a new character Ash will go back to Kanto and become a Frontier Brain?

They did the Sinnoh league pretty well but they didn't need to have a guy with hacked ubers beating up on everyone else. The Ash vs. Paul battle was phenomenal. And then they ruined it. Ash should've won there, completing his story.

This battle seemed to be nothing even close to that, and they'll probably find some dumb way to keep Ash around, even though he's past his prime. He's a big reason a lot of people bail after a few years.

Yep. He has beaten the Battle Frontier, so him beating the league after that would have been a great send-off.

Oh and remember that random dude with the Heatran? Yeah, he was defeated off screen. Wasted foreshadowing.

The leagues have generally been pretty insulting to the viewers. DP had the best battle of all time and then the mess that was Tobias, in Unova he lost to a complete idiot and then in XY they heavily teased it and then he lost. This league was certainly worse than DP and XY but Ash won, so there's the argument there that it's better just because of that. It's like Lesnar beating the Undertaker's streak. The match was bad, but since Lesnar beat the streak the moment overrides how poor the match was. Nobody remembers the bad match, just the moment.

I haven't actually seen it yet other than from the numerous memes and articles, because I'm not caught up with the anime as SM in general has not been as good imo.

Back in Kalis it had a lot to do with Ash Greninja, which screamed generic shounen anime that felt like it didn't belong in Pokmon despite the games later welcoming it as well.

It also had a lot to do with the build up. In Sinnoh, it genuinely felt to the viewer like he was the best he's ever been and there's some part of me that thinks "if Sinnoh Ash couldn't win, why should Kalos Ash be able to". It was a weaker team overall, Ash himself felt less competent. Of course, you could counter argue that maybe the Sinnoh league was just stronger, I mean Tobias is the strongest person to ever appear, but even so, I wanted Ash to win when he felt most competent.

It's probably too much to expect from a semirebooting children's anime, they'll likely never go back to how they did things back in Sinnoh,but they made it work back then, so it can be done. They'd rather have him begin from scratch every time. And seemingly they'll rather use filler episodes on lol stuff than Ash training, so most evolutions and wins feel unsatisfying and undeserved.

As for this time, well, I really doubt they made any of this a single bit better from where I am, but with how much people complained it Kalos, I'm not all too surprised.

Ash-Greninja was obviously created for the purpose of giving Ash a pseudo-Mega Evolution, because Ash since Gen 3 has restricted himself to catching only Pokemon that are native to the region he is traveling through (catching only Gen 3 Pokemon in Hoenn, Gen 4 Pokemon in Sinnoh, and so on for the other generations). Gen 6 had only one Pokemon with a proper Mega Evolution and that was Diancie, so there was no chance they would have allowed Ash to get that Pokemon. So Ash-Greninja was created to fill-in as his Mega Evolution replacement.

Sun/Moon finally broke a tradition of Ash never catching a single Mythical, when they allowed him to have Meltan/Melmetal. I am a bit disappointed that Ash didn't catch one of the Alola Forms, as I consider them to be completely new Pokemon since they're native to Alola. So it wouldn't feel like Ash was catching a Gen 1 Pokemon in a Gen 7 anime setting.
