OxyContin maker Purdue Phrma is filing for BANKRUPTCY after settlement talks over the deadly overdose crisis hit an impasse as the breakdown puts the first federal trial over the opioid epidemimc on track to begin next month..but without Purdue that sets the stage for a complex legal drama in nearly every state and hundreds of local government

Purdue, the family that owns the company and a group of state attorney general had been trying to find a way to avoid trial and determine their responsibility that cost 400,000 American lives in 20 years

Purdue and the Sackler family had rejected 2 offers from the states over how payments should be settled and the family declined to offer counter proposals

Tennessee Attorney General Herbert Slatery said with that impasse, they expect Purdue to filie for bankruptcy immediately

The failure sets up one of the most tangled bankruptcy cases in the nation's history and would leave every state and 2000 local governments that have sued themto battle it out in bankruptcy court for their remaining assets as it's not clear what a breakdown in settlement talks means for the Sackler family which is being sued separately for 17 states

These lawsuits are likely to face a major hurdle as the Sackler family, who are major donors to museums and other cultural institutions around the world have transferred most of their multibillion empire OVERSEAS.

Pennsylvania AG Josh Shapiro plans to sue the family as other states have who said the family are a group of sanctimonious billionaires who lied and cheated to make a profit

Purdue and other members of the family reached a 270 milion profit settlement with Oklahoma to avoid a trial

Most of those lawsuits have named other opioid makers, distributers and pharamcies in addition to Purdue some of which are pursuing their own settlements as Purdue has been the most popular target because of its OxyContin

Do you approve of these Big Pharma companies going bankrupt?

Do I approve of them going bankrupt? No I don't approve of the arcane financial process that will largely allow them to abandon all responsibility and maintain their wealth.

I approve of them losing EVERYTHING they have for what they had a major part in participating in.

This.

I don't like that the family will likely get to keep their billions of dollars of ill-gotten gains, and the company is basically just a shell they can abandon like a hermit crab.

Its unlikely given their wealth but itd be nice to see some of them behind bars

theres no telling how many parents lost their kids because these bastards decided they wanted to market end of life drugs for general pain relief and falsify information they gave to doctors

Didn't one of the deals that the Sackler family proposed -- that an AG might have refused -- have them give up a few of their billions as well as the company which would have become a public trust?

I'd need to find the rejection (although it *must* have happened if there's bankruptcy talk), but the Sacklers *were* going to give up some of their billions -- 3 billion -- and then the rest of the money to pay the government would come from Purdue's profits after Purdue was run as a public trust (meaning that the Sacklers wouldn't be involved in the company or profit from it):

If you cant deal with that maybe you should spend less time arguing in topics where you defend literal nazis, literal rapists, and now of course Purdue Pharma

Maybe you should get a job as a novelist instead of publishing your fiction on the boards. And, at the very least, you should wait until the topic vanishes before you start making up lies about what I said in a topic. You make Erik's stuff look tame.

Do I approve of a company going bankrupt? Such a poorly phrased and unimportant question. I think if there is a demand for a product, and people want to buy it, then the company will remain in business. If there is no demand, or people decide they dont like the product, or dont like the company itself, then let it go out of business. I dont think there should be government involvement in the process of any company going out of business (ie bankruptcy protections). These things should happen organically due to supply and demand and consensual transactions, or the lack thereof.

Does anyone have any principle of freedom anymore?

You defended the Nazis at Charlottesville, the ones that even r/The_Donald admitted were Nazis prior to the event.

You defended convicted rapist Brock Turner, insisting that his forced penetration of an unconscious girl was not rape.

These are facts. Change your behavior.

You defended the Nazis at Charlottesville,

The Nazis never landed in the US, let alone at Charlottesville. But on the topic of Charlottesville and the statue protest, are you complaining that I once suggested that people have a right to speak without being physically assaulted? Because if you're advocating violence to suppress speech, you really need to re-examine what passes for your moral compass.

Well, that's just a dishonest claim. Then again, all you do is post dishonest claims and outright lies.

What I want is for you to explain how --- in your infinitely twisted logic --- you reached the conclusion I was defending Purdue Pharma. And do it now so the next time you repeat your completely ridiculous claim (which you will), I can point to what I said and your sad attempt to spin it into something else.

It's a painkiller, dude. People who have means to treat pain but refuse to because of fears of misuse shouldn't be allowed to live in luxury.

They did what makes sense in a capitalistic medical system and made a fortune solving a problem people wanted answers to. I'm very resistant to painkillers so I appreciate the existence of medication that might provide some relief.

There are many ways to manage pain. Relying on a highly additive opiate is the worst way possible.

You pick and choose what you respond to. When someone says they want the family to pay and you respond with your tired old judge Judy eyeroll gif, that is you defending them.

Then you freaking praised the deal that the family proposed which would have allowed them to keep pretty much all of their private money theyve reaped from their lies and the suffering that they have caused.

So you're justify loss of life for greed? Being resistant to such addictive substances is a blessing not a curse. It says much that you prefer highly addictive pain relief over that your body is fully capable of producing.
