a little smack on the cheeks isn't gonna hurt anyone. but when the belt or the stick etc come out that's a little harsh. especially if it's on bare ass cheeks.

I wasnt traumatized. My mom only whipped me for stuff like hitting my brother though. Bad grades I got grounded. She was a punishment to fit the crime kinda mom.

Now my grandad was more old-school. He back handed me in thr face for back talking him. Once again I'm not tramuastized but I tell you what, i didnt back talk him for 8 years and then when I did I stayed well out of his arms reach when I did.

And ive grown up to be a calm level headed person who dislikes violence. I wont run from a fight but I will try to use my words to deescalate a situation.

The thing is everyone is different and thats the biggest challenge I think a parent faces. Figuring out what works best with their kid. My mom has raised 5 kids though 3 where between 9 and 15 when she entered there lives. And shes had to do things slightly different for each of us. If something isnt producing the results she wanted she tries something else.

This; for all the talk of resolution and conciliatory, restorative discipline - if a kid is doing something they shouldn't ABSOLUTELY SHOULDN'T, then sometimes it's necessary to bring the big guns out and put a stop to their behaviour without debate.

It was rare for me to do something to provoke that response, but if I did, getting my ass tanned made it categorically clear "DO NOT DO THAT".

If corporal punishment is the default control and discipline method, then it devalues its impact and effectiveness though. If it is frequent and without context or explanation then it is going to encourage the child to respond in kind. It absolutely needs the explanation along with the intervention, without that it's more likely to be interpreted as random violence.

Then again, it's a generation of utter jessies now, so looking at them sideways would be considered abuse.

I'm fine with it in some instances, pain is the body's natural way of telling you to avoid something. You can let a toddler keep reaching for a hot stove top until he burns himself and learns not to touch it, or you can smack him on the hand, causing much less pain and a potential burn, to have the body respond as it would to teach that touching that particular object causes pain.

I still agree. It really just depends on the child and whether or not the parents are in tune enough with them to respond to their needs. I know kida who were beaten and never beaten and turned out to be great. Ive also known many who have turned into the opposite.

I think some children do respond to spankings. But it should obviously be a last resort. I dont think it makes kids more violent or traumatized. I got spanked as a kid. Only for really bad things though and only up until a certain age. Every other time i just got my games taken away. it worked well for me. Today i am neither violent nor afraid of my parents.

This is exactly what I was going to say. You try explaining to a 2 year old why touching the hot stove is bad. They won't understand you in the slightest. You give them a slap on their hand they'll likely never try touching it again.

parents feel compelled to beat their kids who are infinitely physically weaker than them.

notice how most parents stop doing this once kids get bigger. because they can fight back. then the parent is forced to discipline their kid the correct way
