You're steering an animal that randomly changes direction
You have to collect balloons, which are randomly placed, with the smallest most precise hitboxes
You're being bombarded with flying birds that have hitboxes about 17 meters wide and add 5 seconds every time you get hit
You have to get a time better than 0.0 seconds (yes, you read that correctly)

It's 10% skill, 99% balloon and controls luck.

The Chocobo races never really bothered me. It's annoying, but you can brute force it fairly easily - just play it, get used to the movement jank, have a hope in your heart and a prayer in your mind and you can probably knock it out in about an hour. The Chocobo Race is the first Celestial Weapon mission I tend to do.

The one I think is complete, unbridled horse shit is the lightning dodging minigame. You have to dodge 200 lightning bolts consecutively, without getting hit once? At least the Chocobo Race is an activity with stimulating gameplay. Lightning dodging is a complete and utter crapshoot.

Its easy. There's one specific spot you can run in circles in to predictably get lightning strikes. Equip some no-encounter equipment and its possibly the easiest celestial weapon there is

Never understood how this riled people up so much. Takes a few tries usually, doesn't take that long.

I remember thinking the same thing when I did it originally like 15 years ago or whatever, but right now it's proving hard as fuck. Have been trying off and on over a few days to win the race probably put in 3 hours or so at this point.

I know I had temper tantrums/outbursts playing games as a kid and teen, but nothing made me actually cry and throw my controller like that damned Chocobo Race.

The funny thing is it didn't really even take me that many tries to do it either

I've played X about 8 times and done the Chocobo race every time. Best case was first go, it's never taken more than an hour.

You just need to get the hang of it which takes 5min and then get good RNG for your run

I remember the chocobo race giving me trouble. Dodging lightning was tedious. The butterfly hunt had me delirious and pulling at my own hair.

WHY does ANYBODY have ANY trouble whatsoever with the butterflies?

It's just so unbelievably simple. They spawn in the exact same spots every time, they don't move around at all, and there are literal maps of the paths to take if you don't want to figure it out yourself (not that it's in any way difficult to do on your own).

The butterflies have literally never taken me more than 3 tries to complete. 90% of the time I get it on the first try. I just cannot fathom why people even think it's a challenge, let alone hair-pulling difficulty. It's objectively easy as shit.

Actually it has to be less. If you hit 0.0 time exactly, it doesn't give you what you need. It happened to me.

I'm back where I was when I did this the first time around 15 years ago, pretty much. I have Kimahri's, Lulu's and Wakka's left to do.

I can't remember why Kimahri's is hard, it seems easy enough on first glance, might be easier on a big screen in HD than it was back in the PS2 days.

Lulu's....I don't know. I've never managed to dodge more than like, 10 lightning bolts. I want to do it but we'll see.

Wakka's I'm actually looking forward to least, because I remember it's freakin' hours of tedious blitzball games. But maybe this time around I can make a baller team for myself.

chocobo race is heavily relies on luck, but at least it keeps you engaged. while lightning dodge is boring af, not even a visible counter, and reset if you leave the area.

I was sweating bullets when I came up to that shit in the PS3 remaster.

Ended up doing it in the first try.

I play hours of Blitzball just to play it. The only reason I got the redux is for Blitzball. FFX was just a nice bonus.
