That don't go over powered on the newer cards.

I Loved the early magic cards and not so much the newer runs, same with YuGiOh, I like them both back when it was, not basic, but I guess I would call it, less over the top?

Like back when Blue Eyes White Dragon was good on its own, or a Serra Angel was nuts! now there's cards that are like "once a turn I slap your mother with my god hand" and I don't really like that.

To be fair, for as long as mtg has been running, it hasn't power creeped nearly as hard as one might expect.

idk, a lot of MtG's strongest cards are from the beginning. However, in general, there are countless TCGs which have ended so that's kind of a moot point with those.

I enjoy a good game where you can place monsters on the field and fight. Seems like a lot of decks these days (from different TCGs) allows you to play a ton of cards or win within a few turns. I don't think that's very fun.

Both yugioh and mtg were never like you've described, the only thing that's really changed is your awareness of the powerful things a well-tuned deck can do. It sounds like what you really want is a game that you don't already understand and a playgroup that will collectively remain ignorant about strategies beyond what the group figures out on their own.

Buddy I have played MTG and YGO since both were new. neither had decks that you could win in a turn, most games when it was new would last a few turns and were a lot more fun to play. Nowadays you have crap like lantern lock or what have you that once the mechanic drops, its almost always game over.

You really think old decks with black lotus, channel, moxen and ancestral recall couldn't win in 1 turn? You really think decks like lantern control are more oppressive than stasis, winter orb, smokestack, armageddon, opposition or mind over matter?

I'll grant you that modern yugioh is nonsense, but the old days where every deck could jam multiple copies of pot of greed, graceful charity and dark hole made blue eyes look just as worthless. Both game have had busted cards and degenerate strategies since inception. If your play experience differed it's because of who you played with and how competitive their decks were, not the game itself.

just play yugioh as a videogame
the real life game is degenerate trash, just people spamming decks they found on youtube
there's no room for fun basically and you throw hundreds down the drain
the meta actively discourages new people from playing

LOL
so yeah you want a playgroup who doesnt know how to play the game, ohko decks in both those games were prevelant from the start, look at banlists and see how old most of those cards are

Id even argue no pokemon deck has been as degenerate as haymaker from just base set

cards inherently have to get better as time goes on because if the new cards they made werent better why would you ever buy new cards
if my vanilla 1800 beatdown deck remained relevant for 20 years what the fuck would they be printing for those whole 20 years

sorry for the T-T-Triple post ut instead of just attacking you I actually would like to reccomend trying to get into or make a commander playgroup, its a magic format that is a 4 player 100 card singleton with a legendary creature you always have access to.
there is def dumb stuff in commander but the 4 players and inconsistency promote a less competitive userbase, focus on flavor more than optimization and most groups are open to house rules or not doing dummy combo decks since its all in fun.
4 player magic formats is mostly what I play these days, its a lot of fun with good friends

Meta.

New cards can beat metas without being outright better.

Man, I used to leave me some hearth stone. I was "hooked" on it for a while, maybe spent like 100-200 bucks on it (which really isn't that much compared to how much I actually played the game). I hated how much expansions they just kept adding and adding, and that's what caused me to leave the game.

I've played magic since Unlimited.

In unlimited you could Black Lotus, Mox Ruby - sac the Lotus for 3 green mana, cast Channel with 1 mana floating, use the Ruby. Pay 19 life and cast a 20 point fireball on turn one. Was it common? No. But Turn 1 was possible.

During Ice Age we had Icy Manipulator + Winter Orb + Kismet to lock your oppoenents lands down completely. The game lasted more than a few turns, but its not fun to not be able to play any cards.

Alternatively, in the same era - Stasis + Kismet + Storm Cauldron = lock down of your opponent.

During Urza's/Mercadian Masks we had a turn 2 win using Sneak Attack and Serra Avatar. Not to mention all the craziness with Tolarian Academy.

Even a good mono-black deck with Hymn to Tourach, Hyponotic Specter, Mind Twist and the rack was pretty broken back in the day. Not much your opponent can do if on turn one you double dark ritual away most of their hand. I won a few tournaments that way back in the day.

I know I'm missing a ton of old combo decks like Land's Edge or combos that just locked your opponent down.

Long story short, we always had some broken decks and card combos back when magic first came out. It's actually much calmer now than it was (unless your playing vintage or modern)... people just didn't really know about most of the combos until things like The Dojo came out and "net decks" became a thing.

I wish

It's a new format for yugioh. Less life points and less monster and spell/trap zones. Also you get like a passive ability like in duelist kingdom

That's one of my biggest gripes with TCGs as well.

Power creep and the introduction of overly complicated mechanics.
