The concept and characters interest me but I don't know how fun and easy to understand the gameplay is.

I've never played it, but my older sister loves the game. And she's not much of a gamer. So I'd guess the gameplay is pretty easy to understand.

I liked it. It was pretty simplistic to play. I lost interest in it pretty quickly though.

The gameplay is easy to pick up and is a ton of fun with a full group of friends. My issue is mostly with everything outside of the gameplay. The leveling system is garbage as is the one time use items and the way the perk system works just penalizes new people to the game.

The basic concept is easy enough to understand. Some of the strategy isn't as much, chief among them that as the Killer camping a Survivor on the hook is generally a bad idea and not just because it's "rude", to the point that even the devs really didn't understand that when they were making the game and the tutorial they included for over a year told people to do that.

Behavior themselves often make questionable decisions, such as their knee-jerk reaction to immediately nerfing Freddy to high hell for over a year. I've also never seen a company intentionally fix something and then re-break it a patch or two later as often as them.

Overall I like it but I haven't played in quite some time because my potato of a laptop can barely run the game anymore.

Especially when playing the Killer. At least as a Survivor you'll have 3 other people that probably have perks that the Killer has to deal with.

why shouldn't the killer camp a hook? when i watch streams i've noticed they don't usually do it and i assumed it was just because it's kinda cheap

Because then the survivors can just ignore that person and finish all the generators, then leave without rescuing that person.

If the killer gets only one hook, even if it is a full sacrifice, that nets them like, 0 points.

I imagine it's because time spent camping a hook is time letting the other survivors wander around freely, while an unhooked player is still injured and will survive less time on the next hooking.

I'm surprised this game is still kicking around and now I'm intrigued. It was a huge mess on release but 3+ years of updates and a loyal fan base makes me want to give it a try

And if you really can't deal with them prepare for a long game of Survivors farming the fact that you won't catch them. Also getting perks can take awhile but there are daily quests to help gain exp faster, except some of those require you to have perks that you won't have if new.

To get maximum points, you actually have to hook at least 5 times, which means someone was saved at least once.

The Endgame Collapse mostly mitigated that afaik, though I haven't played since they added it.

Both do in fact apply. Also, as long as you don't go especially far away, in the time it takes you to get back after the unhook notification you should usually be able to find either the original victim or the person that unhooked them, assuming you didn't just find someone else in the meantime.

(Manners is choosing to go after the person that saved first when you find them both, at least in most cases.)

Also, despite us saying that Killer is far more to play for beginners, it does give you a lot more indication of some of the less obvious game mechanics than Survivor does, so don't put off trying some rounds early on as Killer for that reason. Just know that you will not do well.

True. In a game with 5 people who have never played before, even if they've read up on the rules, the overwhelming odds are that the Killer will absolutely dominate...

...unless the Killer picks Nurse. Despite how absolutely insanely busted as she is at max talent to the point that she really shouldn't even be in the game, a new player will get wrecked as her. She is the only Killer with a natural run speed that is actually slower than the Survivors.

The game can potentially be a lot of fun. And it has a fairly deep meta game, but it's also really frustrating and anger inducing.
