I'll leave you with a piece of art from 1948 that illustrates it. And for those of you who after that still hold to your justifications for murder, I want you to know that the world has and always will fight you and people like you until there are none of you who are left who aren't the skulking cravenly cowards too afraid to stand by your words. And those that remain and fester will once again be hewn down in good time when they too decide to live out their warped ideas.

So may the rotting of those vacuous stilled husks be as a cornucopia to feed the earthen soil, and then billow up an overabundance of rich flora that ever crowds the planet. Letting the irony of their passing feed the mouths of those they would extinguish, and so on into eternity and their limitless offspring sooner measured by the number of stars in our universe.

If your goal is to cut down half the population of the universe, doing it via the infinity gauntlet is a mercy and perfectly fair, without bias, compared to the choices of your kill squads.

He had a valid point in that life in the universe would be better off if there were fewer people relative to the amount of available resources. He just lacked the imagination to realize that he could have used his literally infinite power to do things like making the universe's resources stop being finite. He wasn't wrong, just short-sighted and genocidal.

It wasn't just people he killed though. It was "life" plants and animals as well.
And yeah technically I guess that's true but it's just a big dumb plan.

He had been killing half of civilizations manually prior to the stones. He was just continuing to do what he had been doing.

I think he considers plant life a resource. Personally, I would've considered animals a resource too. I think Thanos might be vegetarian though. Maybe even vegan.

I was wondering about that. Plants and animals would be resources. So, if he got rid of them, thats also getting rid of resources...

Democracy only extends to those within it.

Even democratic countries have to use force when those who do "evil" refuse to step down. Murder isn't justifiable when it comes to tyrannical leaders using it as their means of success, but when those same leaders fail to see any other alternative to gaining power, including peace talks, then other world powers have to use the only method that will work on them.

The way Thanos did it, all living things would immediately repopulate within 50 years, making everything he did completely pointless. Those 50 years wouldn't even see the benefit since -in this movie- killing half the population causes an apocalypse. (irl I'd imagine things would go on just fine considering there's always someone waiting to fill in a government position)

Also, he assumes every civilization in the universe is overpopulated, Humanity is just in the very very very narrow window where we're (some of us) starting to realize we can't keep growing without dropping dead faster soon.

So yeah, Thanos was a dumbass, despite TC an incoherent argument. Thanos actually had to bring back natural selection if he wanted to save anything. Right idea, poor execution.

That said, I can't tell if that makes him a better or worse character than the comic version, considering he was just flat out crazy in the comics.

Does he represent a flawed and ineffective genocidal maniac, or does he just represent flat out insane genocidal maniac? He should have represented a pessimistic and desperate solution to a real problem, that would have made the Avengers the bad guys in some sense.

That's why it's so incoherent. The writers took a problem that related to humans right now and applied it to every other alien race.

Of course, then Thanos also speaks northern US accent English for no reason, and is basically a big blue human despite being an alien, so idk why I'm getting stuck on this.

Oh, also, he destroys the gems so he can never do it again, even though the universe will be just as overpopulated in 50-100 years. :P

Of course not. It's only temporarily hindered.

The one guy petting a lion is sort of an outlier though, doesn't really keep up with the amount that nature intended. Society does their best to make sure it's as hindered as possible

because he used his own planet and the hundreds he'd been to as a reference

and he revised his plan come endgame to wiping out all life and starting over instead of just half.

Brandon, until this very moment, the world and the people in it have always been dark and incomprehensible to me, and I've tried to clear my way with logic and superior intellect, and you've thrown by own words right back in my face; you've given my words a meaning that I never dreamed of, and you tried to twist them into a cold logical excuse for your ugly murder!

Tonight you've made me ashamed of every concept I've ever had, of superior or inferior beings, but I thank you for that shame, because now I know that we're each of us a separate human being, Brandon, with the right to live and work and think as individuals, but with an obligation to the society that we live in. By what right do you dare say that there's a superior few to which you belong? By what right did you dare decide that that boy in there was inferior and therefore could be killed?

Did you think you were God, Brandon? Is that what you thought when you choked the life out of him? Is that what you thought when you served food from his grave! I don't know what you thought or what you are, but I know what you've doneYOU'VE MURDERED! You've strangled the life of a fellow human being who could live and love as you never could... and never will again!
