This post offers some pretty good advice imo. If you have enough time I think you can start learning with Genki/another textbook alongside RTK rather than after, but if not nbd.

I have been watching Kimagure Orange Road.

I can understand a fair deal of it. It helps that they're not using a bunch of slang and when they do it has the translation info appear.

yu but IIRC the perfect square can also be the guchi kanji IIRC, in simplified computer text it appears as perfect sometimes.

And today we have the most kanji-heavy sentence I've ever put in my SRS.

Roughly translated

I can relate, although I'd probably still feel compelled to check out Tokyo if I'd already come all the way to Japan. At the very least I'm sure there's some tasty ass food there. But Kyoto seems the most appealing to me atm, I love the scenery and temples and stuff.

Yeah, i am totally burned out lol, i will keep learning, but i will stay from duolingo for a while. Maybe i will watch more misa videos, concentrate on finding new sources.

The repetitive nature of duolingo can be useful i admit, and it does hammer the lessons into my head, buf damn i need a break. Just said goodbye to my 40+ days streak

Yeah I like mixing up sources from time to time to keep things a bit fresh. Have you been using a source for grammar? Duolingo is useful, but really lacking in that department in my experience.

i am using http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/ in tandem. whenever i reach a new section in duolingo and i don't know the grammar, i read and try to find it on the grammar guide. yeah, duolingo suck ass at grammar, and other sources helps alot. for example, the conjugations makes so much sense if you know the rules. duolingo just throw it at you without explaining the contexts.

it's great to learn grammar though, while the guide to japanese is kinda hard to learn kanji with, since when they mention a kanji, they usually dont write the translation / kana anymore in the next chapters so it is easy to forget

I took Japanese for a few semesters in college, and fuck around with Duolingo once in a while.

My wife and I are gonna honeymoon in Japan next spring, so I need to start brushing up and learn travelers Japanese at least.

How do you conjugate verbs in the casual/normal way, instead of polite form? Like for , do you do anything? Or just leave it as is?

dictionary form is casual ongoing/future tense. So yeah, would be the same as
past tense uses the form, it's a bit more complicated so probably google that one

Yeah. For verbs where you don't drop the you change the last hiragana to the form (or if the last hiragana is ), then add So for "don't understand" and for "won't buy". Past tense negative would be -so

Different reading of the kanji, although I don't really know why that reading is used. Maybe it's always used when specifying a particular mountain? Idk.

San is just the suffix for mountains. If it ends with "yama" it's more likely to be the name of a town or a person.
