I've been using the Japan from Zero books/YouTube videos to learn. I'm on the second book right now. It's pretty slow paced, but I feel like things are explained well and I'm learning a lot. Might switch over to Genki after this book though, I dunno.

Additionally, I recently started following this guide for learning kanji: https://nihongoshark.com/learn-kanji/ . They're a pain in the ass but I look forward to getting them out of the way. Unfortunately things are gonna slow down soon once this next semester starts back up.

Oh, new thread?

I've just been watching videos and playing games. reading stuff

That's my "studying" anymore.

My friend who's just starting JP convinced me to start learning Spanish. So @Yomi while I don't need your advice, thought you might be interested to hear it. Skimmed over a grammar guide to become aware of what is what, but the language largely makes sense when you see it in action as opposed to viewing walls of conjugations.

Literally just been reading the internet in Spanish and taking a more "direct" approach to getting input than Japanese provides for in the early stages. Literally just been reading for hours while at work. Couldn't speak it if you asked me to, but I know from experience that continued, repeated exposure will eventually yield results.

And consuming it in the quantities one early on, seems like it'll go 2x as fast as Japanese.

I studied for 20 years. I don't actively do it anymore. I'll watch a movie in Japanese or the sumo basho now and then and of course if I go to Japan I'll speak it. Most of my Japanese friends (in the US & Japan) prefer to speak in English with me nowadays. I do order in Japanese when I go to a Japanese restaurant, even in the US. For whatever reason though, I am finding that many Chinese and Koreans are opening Japanese places and the staff doesn't speak Japanese. Sitting at the counter and chatting up the sushiya and watching him cut fish can be enjoyable.

I need to get back into learning the language. I only studied for one year with the Genki textbook but it helped build some foundation that I've been able to use. I just need to actually push myself to open the textbook and start practicing.

When I was there in 2017, a lot of tourists used google translate. I guess that's better than nothing but at least learn:

"good morning" - ohaiyo gozaimasu
"good day" - konnichiwa
"good evening" - oyasuminasai
"Please" - kudasai
"Thank you" - arrigato gozaimasu
and
"excuse me" - sumimasen

As for language books, I'm sure someone else can steer you in the right direction better than I.

You can also get by - in big cities at least - by writing down your question in English. They study English until 12th grade there IIRC. They can't speak it but most can read simple sentences.

I doubt I'll end up being any good at speaking Japanese since I really have no way to practice it. I'm mostly interested in reading/listening anyways though, not active participation, but it seems like a waste to learn the language and be unable to speak it well.

tbf if you're at that point reading this stuff, those kanji that I'm assuming you didn't know the reading/meaning of are fairly novel and therefore pretty easy to remember by virtue of that.

That's kind of the nice thing I guess, the "harder" ones are actually easier to remember imo since you'll probably remember when you saw it/the context it was in and even if the reading escapes you, you'll at least know what it means.

Japanese Ammo and Japanese HANJO TV YouTube channels have some Japanese lessons sometimes. There is also the Wikipedia pages for Katakana, Hiragana, and Joyo Kanji if you want to learn as much as possible for free. There is also the Hepburn Japanese to English dictionary, but certain translations and words are out-of-date today.

I'm impressed with how well RTK has worked for me so far, I've already "learned" over 300 kanji in just 2 weeks. I've been playing Judgment and it's cool to recognize the kanji for "cheap" on store signs, and things like "extinguish fire untenstil" on a fire extinguisher. I'll probably stick with this method.

The secret is "read more"

There's only a handful of inflections in Japanese and just through reading you will be exposed to them all in large amounts, in a short period of time.

This is how I'm approaching Spanish as well, even though it has a ton more conjugations. See it in action, and you'll remember how things are supposed to look and sound.

You should be doing that anyway. I tried doing the all-immersion-no-study thing for about half a year. Because of that I know from experience that immersion combined with dedicated study is many times superior to immersion alone.

Remember, native speakers in all first-world countries study the grammar of their own language in school.

Wasn't there another one? I seem to recall there being a second kind

There's an entire trilogy, for Hiragana/Katakana/Kanji respectively: https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/7746/Learn_Japanese_To_Survive_Trilogy/

Although if you're thinking of something completely different than idk, I'm sure there's a bunch of Japanese learning games out there. But honestly, there are quicker and much more efficient ways of learning than through games anyways. I'd only really recommend them if those methods can't maintain your focus or if you have a very casual interest in learning.

Yeah, I know it is a zoro scene because one of the name spelled roronoa zoro.

I guessed it was that scene where zoro sacrificed his body to protect people.

One piece have many memorable awesome scenes. There are surprisingly huge amount of kanji in that dialogue. I kinda expect shonen jump manga would have more kana because the target are teenagers, but i guess some of those kanji are middle school/high school level.

I recognize very few of them, then again i know only the most basic, with additional ones.

I recognize (i know from jojo because it is the first character from "muda") (altho i dont know the meaning of the word in that text, but i know the kanji from basic word )

other than that yea. I cant even read a complete sentences , but i am still learning , and it's reallh fun so far.
