Things like this were fine to joke about in the days where people didn't latch onto every fucking conspiracy theory out there. But now we've got a large contingent of crazy fucks that will literally believe in all sorts of dumb shit. You just know theres going to be a bunch of dumb kids and dumb adults googling that the moon landing was fake and actually believing the stupid crap they read. Unfortunately shit like this has literally proven to be a slippery slope to stuff that is much worse than people believing the earth is flat.

Unfortunately we now live in a world where people are skeptical of the obvious and ready to believe stuff they should outright realize is crazy. Or probably more accurately this was always true just now the internet exists to exploit people in mass.

I just kind of wish GFAQs wouldn't pander to the insanity.

I get that any publicity is good publicity for conspiracy theorists. Supposedly the flat earth movement grew after the scathing Netflix documentary in which flat earthers accidentally proved themselves wrong

At the same time I view today's poll more as

"Are you with it?"
1) Yes
2) Yes, but I don't trust the government
3) no, I'm ignorant
4) no, I'm an idiot
5) no, I'm a fucking idiot

If people are dumb asses and literally the only way to prevent them from going off the deep end is to prevent them from finding out the deep end exists, I'm not sure what we can do

Tomorrow should be a poll about evolution

Actually, it's quite natural to doubt the moon landings when at the time we could barely leave orbit. The journey to the moon and back is substantially more challenging. It'd not be a certainty to pull off even today.

it's not unreasonable to believe the moon landing's live broadcast wasn't actually live. If shit hit the fan you would be broadcasting the death of 3 dudes and also broadcasting to the world how bad you are at the whole Cold War thing

Perhaps the same could be said of all live TV.

In fact it wouldn't surprise me if it was more live back then than it would be now, since now everything is on delays for censors and stuff. Not sure how long ago they started doing that.

We literally broadcasted 9/11.

You think there weren't network execs somewhere salivating at the thought of something going wrong with the moon landing?

Its not like they stopped showing live shots after the first tower fell either. Once that happened they knew it was probably a matter of time for the second.

Not to mention the live shots of all the jumpers.

It wasn't until we accidentally showed an out of focus nipple that live television delay really became a thing for that matter.

People don't become moon landing skeptics because they're so dumb that just seeing the concept makes them believe in it. They believe it because when they look at a topic with skepticism, and they find one side that has a lot of "facts" and arguments, and the other side is drowned out by people like you who think it's dumb to not to instantly believe dogmatic facts that they learned in grade school, they go with the more intelligent option of the two.

The truth is if you actually took the effort into learning why the moon landing is perceived as fake, you not only would actually learn something and probably gain a reasonable understanding of why there's skepticism amoung the general populace, but you would also actually understand the goddamn moon landing. As it is, if we had a televised debate with you and a moon landing denier, I'm pretty sure the denier could dance circles around you.

tl;dr moon landing deniers are dumb, but they're that way largely because of people like you.

because its a demonstrated and then exploitable science of how easy it is to convince people of literally anything. Its a bookmark for future bad faith arguments that can cause true harm to society.

Also, most of us are too young to truly understand it but the moon landing was actually a hugely important moment in our history.

These statements are literally contradictory by the way. You are saying these people that deny the moon landing would be better informed by looking at why people think the moon landing is fake but somehow this would lead to them believing it was real. I've got news for you, they immediately stop at the first source(Which is fake and full of misinformation) and the fake sources pretty much -never- link or mention the real sources.

This stuff has stopped being satire and is now just people out to spread misinformation.

And the roadmap for this is used to spread other bits of much more harmful misinformation.

No I actually was bored at work the other day and people were spewing conspiracy links on twitter and there was a really good dedicated website linked. I'm trying to find it for you but it was on my phone and literally doesn't come up with a search of "moon". That was probably the furthest I've looked into beyond a few token "oh hey these theories are crazy heres why" many years back.

Hence why this was actually on my mind when the poll came up.

I also happened to be at a public place that had something to commemorate the moon landing and there were literal people that got up at points to spout out to the crowd that the whole thing was fake. It was really fucking depressing. So the poll coming a bit after that absolutely touched a nerve.

I mean that wasn't even meant to be a dis, either. I certainly haven't looked into it myself! I'll admit that cause like, whatever, it doesn't make you stupid to not have looked into it. Just never was something I cared to investigate so I have no opinion on the validity of the conspiracy theorists vs the consensus. I'm sorta just over here in the camp of not really caring if it's true or not and just blindly accepting it happened cause that's general opinion and why not.

Though now reading this topic I probably will watch that Mythbusters episode cause Mythbusters is cool. Or I thought it was this topic. Maybe it wasn't this topic. Someone mentioned a Mythbusters episode somewhere on the board but ctrl F doesn't find it here so ???

I'm saying this shouldn't be that hard to google search but people(and the internet) have been exploited in horrible ways.

Basically, at a certain point, there are certain major events that we should be able to take as fact without needing to fend off conspiracy theories. Because at a certain point in human history physical evidence to these facts will no longer exist. We should be able to take historical facts at face value and not have people literally just denying facts.
