Board 8 > how is Brooklyn 99 so good from the start?

I'm on episode 20 of season 1 but it feels like a show that's had 4 or 5 seasons to figure out all of its characters and dynamics

how did i go without watching this show for so long

It's not that funny some parts are hit or miss on a tremendous scale. Captain Holt is amazing, then Gina just makes me want to puke.

Gina appears to be a very divisive character in general. She's fairly low on my list, but my wife and some other people I know like her the best.

So there must be something to the character even if I don't understand it.

I'm partway into season 2

Boyle > Holt > Terry > Hitchcock > Peralta > Diaz > Santiago > Scully > Gina

I feel like the female characters in this show are very one-dimensional so far.

Gina is given a lot of the most over the top and zany comedy as time goes on.

I'm not a huge fan but the appeal is plain to see.

Ironically I like Gina more than most of the cast and the main thing holding her back from being in the running for best character is the over the top and zany stuff, which is just too ridiculous for me generally.

Think Boyle is the only one I'm on the fence of whether I even like him. Rest of the cast is excellent.

If you really like their bit Hitchcock seems like the main guy of the two and Scully is sorta just there for the ride. I could see it.

i don't feel comfortable giving rankings yet but i think diaz is the bottom so far. she has funny moments but her "grrrr" thing mostly falls flat

But Holt is superior to all.

I wasn't huge on the recent season after the network change, felt like when Futurama came back, lost it's consistency. Still good enough, though. Those first 5 seasons are for sure better.

No joke, I thought for years about whether or not to watch B99 and finally relented a year ago, and the reason I was unsure was Boyle. I can't stand his face or character or anything. And then I watched it and he's still pretty bad but he doesn't ruin the show or anything.

yeah, he's got a lot of experience with parks and rec and the office. i kind of feel like a lot of the relationships feel a little cheap because they just "imported" some of those tropes over, but it's fine.

I forgot he even was a part of the Office, it's been so long. (Though that makes me remember he was Mose, and makes Mose extra hilarious when you know he hated doing it.)

Also The Good Place. That's a good track record.

Yes it certainly hits the ground running. But it makes sense- the showrunner and staff learned from their previous NBC comedies and were able to avoid a rocky start (unlike The Office and Parks).
