Clock Tower series, Silent Hill series, Resident Evil series.

Weird, all the first ones that come to mind definitely are not first person...

Sure there are. Just that most released in the last several years are going with the first person hide and seek simulator style. Not everything goes that way though. Some stick to the classics.

and you've zero examples. i don't disagree that there are plenty of fps horror games, but "not a lot" of others is completely wrong, ok?

little nightmares, ok?
friday the 13th, ok?
saya's song, ok?
i have no mouth and i must scream, ok?
white chamber, ok?
dead space games, ok?

Fatal Frame sort of straddles the line, because the perspective changes when you use the camera.

It's funny, now that I think about it, but pretty much every horror game that has actually made me feel creeped out and eerie (as opposed to just relying on stupid jump scares) is third person.

idk, there are probably as many non-FP ones as there are FP ones. FP is the more natural POV, though.

I would guess that's because you can't rely as much on a restrictive field of view in a third-person game, making it harder to rely on jump scares and shifting the focus to the environment.

I loved Siren PS2, and I think most gamers today would be hard pressed to 100% that one without a guide based on it's non-linear story telling method. Good luck using the freezer in one story mode to freeze a wet towel, only to have another story come along and place a piggy bank on the frozen towel across a gap in a later story, only to have a third party slip through the gap created by that distraction to see the final scenes.

As to The Suffering, it might be hard to find now, but it was at one point a free for PC Midway title, but I'd originally played it on PS2.

I love the game. Early horror disguised as fps title. Sounds simplistic, but back in my bad old coke days, there were numerous points in that game due to the hallucinations that happened at random where I literally dropped the controller and walked away to smoke a stoge. So did my buddy sitting next to me who wasn't even playing.

It's a shame Midway poofed and Suffering was a standalone game. I would have loved a franchise that ran on the same concepts.

So many mindfucks in this game. The video is from the PC version, but it's a hidden gem I rarely see mentioned. Sure there's the usual cutscenes, but I've never seen a game that also throws random mindfucks the way this does except maybe the Bloodshot games but there are no QT events attached to them In The Suffering, they're just there to screw with your head.
