A military vet is sitting in the park talking on camera and thinking about his life. Then a cop tells him the park is closed. Man says sorry and apologies and gets up to leave. And then cop accuses him of throwing something on the ground and tackles him despite not being able to see anything on the ground

And then arrests the man for an offense that is barely even worth a warning (being in the park after hours)

He is, but I think the Cop as well.

That being said the Vet could have easily just talked to the cop calmly, but he got aggressive and defensive which of course is gonna make the cop cautious

What the fuck the vet wasnt aggressive in the slightest he was being nice and polite until the cop accused him of throwing drugs on the ground and forced him to the ground for no reason

Things certainly escalated way too quickly

But the way that guy was sitting in the darkness rambling on like that I cant really fault an on duty cop for assuming the guy was on some hard drugs

He likely has a mental illness of some kind but he wasn't hurting anyone. Most crazy people are harmless. This guy was being weird but I don't think anyone was in danger

The accusation of tossing something to the ground was baseless and stupid. He could have swept with his flashlight and seen there was nothing there

And rhen he starts trying to grab the phone or camera or whatever it was and demanding to know what it is. He can damn we'll see what it is. And he had his fucking hands on. I don't believe for a second he didn't know by that point it was a damn phone or camera.

One thing despise when cops do is to escalate situations and turn something calm into a battle just because they are on an ego trip

he didn't ask for the camera. he just suddenly ripped it out of the man's hands

the man was very calm and obedient until the cop freaked out. he didn't disobey. he never had a chance to follow any orders. the only thing the cop said before he flipped out was "this park is closed" so the man said "oh sorry. I'll leave" and then everything after that is the cop acting insane

Reminder, despite being a shut-in, Zikten is 200% times more likely to get shot by the police because he's autistic.

And the response is "No" and then "I'm gone", respectively.

I don't know who's right or wrong, but the guy was clearly arguing. having worked at night, I've encountered cops many a time, and arguing with them is never something that I would even consider. They ask a question, I explain, or say yes/no (and that can even be too much). They tell me something, I say "I understand". that's it.

the wrong assumption is, they're there to help you and care about your well-being. no, they're looking for an excuse to do something to you. don't give them one.

The problem with that is that level of bootlicking only encourages the "hero/warrior cop" mentality, and frankly we've reached a point where these "public servants" need to be reminded that they aren't in fact an army of occupation to which we are subjects.

I guess if you find yourself wanting to make a political statement while being questioned by cops, go right ahead, but if you want to not be hassled, just say as little as possible. (and as various lawyer videos out there will point out, it's basically never in your best interest to say anything to a cop, ever. legally, it can never help you, it can only hurt you.)

A normal person would have showed the cop his camera and said I have nothing, let me show you, and then let me go but this guy wanted to argue with the cop right away. He was sitting in a really dark parkway and you can tell the cop was uneasy

I'm not okay with having my rights trampled because cops act more like soldiers than public servants since 9/11 just because it's convenient. It's that exact sort of warming of the pot that's gotten us to this point to begin with.

Check out the channel Zik's video is from. There are countless examples of this sort of unnecessary escalation there and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

you're thinking of it as two normal mutually cooperative people, which it isn't. it's more like an abuser/abused situation, which I'm unfortunately pretty familiar with. even if you don't give them an excuse, they might still do something to you. all you can do is let them make as many mistakes as possible, and make as few of your own as possible (preferably zero), so that it remains as unambiguous as possible who the asshole is. let them dig their own grave while you steadfastly refuse to dig yours. (this of course more or less only works in some form of public.)

Point being, in all of these cases the cop is obviously just trying to escalate the situation beyond reason. They're public servants, not crusaders.

There's also NO WAY you watched like half an hour of footage in less than 15 minutes. I get that you might have a form of Stockholm Syndrome, but that's not a world I aspire to live in. I don't pay taxes to be treated like a criminal by default.

I know, but it only escalates if both parties participate. it's a back and forth cycle. if you don't contribute to the cycle, it stalls. it's not easy to do, but it works in other areas of life as well when dealing with conflict.

I don't know what your alternative is, either. I agree that there's a problem, but I'm explaining what to do when you are actually in the situation. what do you suggest doing when you are in this situation?

I have an 18650 flashlight in my pocket at all times. How does this cop patrol at night without any flashlight at all? Its trivial to claim any number of bullshit claims after dusk if one can't see a damned thing...*consults almanac* roughly 50 % of the time.

There are so many aspects to Zik's video that could have been handily resolved if the civilian had a flashlight, or if the cop had bothered to use his.

Don't play dumb and act like this dipshit cop hadn't gone into this conflict blind despite having a car full of lighting and standard issue Maglites.
