Food, rent, internet, renewal of state ID... It sucks so hard. It sucks when potential employers are basically like "We like you, but we're hiring everyone else who isn't you." It sucks when you don't know what you're going to do to survive, let alone live.

Yup. People say money cant buy happiness, but clearly, these people havent had to decide on if they want to enjoy life or work to pay for things like food or a home.

The "best" part is all the people who are like "I wish I could help," or "Have you tried Starbucks or [insert random place]?" Yes, of course I've tried so many places around here, and had two interviews in the last three months. Now excuse me while I fall further into a hole because Spectrum internet is still running the meter despite having not provided shit since the end of April, and also excuse me while I starve.

Then there are services in my area that are supposed to help. Only a couple want money for it (uhh what?) and the others are run by churches renowned for their cultish or brainwashy behavior.

Bah!

Bah!

I feel ya. It shouldnt be normal to have to work multiple jobs just to make ends meet.

Boomers had it easy. Work 40 hour weeks for 30 years and you have it made.

In my case, I have no paying job. I wish I did. I could make it with 16-18k a year, after taxes. I'd need 2k or so to make the next month work in my favor, but 1300-1350 on average usually goes well for me. I don't even have 10 bucks.

As an experiment I opened a GoFundme to see if anyone would help, without advertising it, and I got nothing. That's exactly the amount I expected to receive. Not all of us on this board can live off of everyone else's hard work, I guess.

My one solace in the last few months, actually, has been the novel I finished writing my first draft on and am working on the revision. I did this during the first 30 minutes of a day and last few hours daily - managing 166k words in 60-something days. <_<

I'd like to publish this book on eBooks and Amazon, but I need to live long enough to make that work, ya know?

Not as much as it could, but I wouldn't doubt it in some places, even here in SoCal. It's honestly a problem that has dated back before I started to come out or transition, where jobs would go to other people, whether because they have more relevant experience or because of my luck of the draw. Competing against hundreds or thousands of people for any one position can do that.

I'll take something that pays, but it seems easiest at this point to get a job from a restaurant or cafe. I have close to seven years experience in the area, and under one in call center work.

Again, I would prefer to get my novels published, and am revising one of them so it's more polished and ready to rock. Being able to see a dime of that, however, means I need to be able to support myself and survive, or better, until then. I've seen offers to write for websites or a couple other places, but none of them offer pay. So... *shrugs*

As far as restaurants go, I feel like a lot of catering jobs make some pretty decent tip money, and you wouldn't have to interact with people as much as you would waitressing. I dunno how much you'd need to make to get by though, I'd imagine southern California is probably pretty expensive.

Know how you feel op.
I used to be fairly well off for years.

But things went south lately. I had a lot of opportunities to better my station but I never did was happy with slacking. Now everything is in the shitter for now anyway. Made a lot of bad financial decision lately. Lost thousands.

PC broke down, then the PS4, everything has gone up except my salary. Gona take me months to save up to sort this out. PC parts are ridiculous.
Had to move to a shittier area with shitty people. Lost my high speed internet.

Was so bad I was eating peanut butter sandwiches for lunch and supper. Finally recovering, there is lot of cool shit I want to buy but can't afford it. meh bleh

I'd love to open a cafe that caters to board gamers, with a couple rooms in the back for bigger or louder groups such as DnD players, but that would require funds as well.

And time plus paperwork to set up.

And a good location for it.

I have the full concept in mind as well as a name for it. That is all. The only voice of dissent out of everyone I've told so far has been the woman responsible for my lifelong mental scarring. So I know it's a good idea. The question is how do I get to that point, while supporting myself and so forth?

That's a good question. I used to know someone who started 2 businesses but they worked their backsides off to get the money before going to the small business administration (SBA) for a loan. Your local community college or high school might have a class on how to start a small business; if you have to pay for the class, I wouldn't know since I don't live in that area of the country. The first thing, though is that you're going to need some kind of collateral and a drawn out business plan that you can present to investors in order to convince them to lend you the money necessary.

Starting a small business is among the riskiest things you can do. It can still be worth it for many people, but I'd only recommend it to people that have what it takes to reduce the risk of starting a small business - either lots of money, or lots of people who can give you money. A lot of experience in the field that you want to start the small business in. If you have neither of those, count me as another person who thinks it's a bad idea.

you work your ass off.

my wife worked full time through college, and i worked 2 jobs for 6 years to see her through it.

after she graduated and got regular work i started my first business. it was an 80 hour a week endeavor and i was barely earning enough to make ends meet and put away money to start the business i actually wanted to. i was basically a broker, and the vast majority of my profits were pumped back into the business in order to keep it moving forward.

after another 5 years of this i closed my last deal and used the entirety of my funds to study up, get my PI license and start making some actual money.

so from my experience i can tell you to expect at least a decade of hard work and long exhausting hours if you want to succeed. also helps a lot to have a partner that you will support when they need it and who will support you when you do.

its not easy, and its not for everybody. there is nothing wrong with you if you dont make it, and there is nothing particularly special about you if you do. people have different priorities, but its best if you admit to yourself what those priorities are so that you can buckle down and see them fulfilled.

I do wish IDs where free (In the sense tax money pays for it) because if you legally are supposed to have it why the fuck should people have to pay for it.

I can see charging for replacements if you lose youra thats about it.

But what made me think about this was when people started arguing over voter id laws. I support voter id laws so I especially think they should be free on those grounds as well.

Every time someone opened a place like that (or similarly, one for video games) near where I live, they always wound up tanking.

The desire to turn your hobby or passion into a career (or share it with other people) really isn't enough if the demand isn't there.

There's 2 board game cafes like this within 2 blocks of my apartment. They're both steady all the time. One has turned into a vegan hotspot for snacks and they're extra busy. I'm certain that if one folds it's going to be the place not trying to bring in new demographics.

Really depends on your market and how you do things. Most businesses of any kind will close within a few years.

Right. I remember this one smoothie place I loved in the short time it was open. It had strawberry smoothies that tasted like strawberries rather than the synthetic stuff that calls itself strawberry flavoring, the prices were as right as the consistency, and it was across from the parking lot from my job at the time. They got away, too, with calling it Maui Wowi!

Then Jamba Juice opened across the street. The smoothie place I liked closed within the month.

Shit sucks.
