Yeah Jeff's experience as pretty baffling there. You could tell everyone else couldn't understand what the fuck happened there.

I think he just wasn't in the mood to put any effort into playing it.

It's a game that doesn't tell you where to go, which means you have to have curiosity in order to press onward. And if you get unlucky and don't find something interesting quickly, then yeah, you'll bounce off, unless you've got energy to try one more time.

I think it's rather similar to how Vinny didn't care for Mario Maker 1 at all, that game also requires effort to enjoy it. If you're not in the mood to do the effort of creating levels, and you're not in the mood to work through the random levels it serves you to find gems, you're not going to enjoy that one either. If he was luckier, he might have found some great stuff off the bat, but he probably didn't!

From Jeff's point of view the game is punishing him by even having a time limit in the first place as he feels he has to run through everything and ignore the details because that's what decades of playing video games that isn't this or Majora's Mask has taught him.

In the end he's wrong on this matter, but it's easy to see how he had the experience he did.

There's no time limit in the tutorial, but I guess Jeff is also the kind of guy to just follow mission objectives and not stop to smell the roses.

I never got off the planet in that game because it was just...infuruatingly uninteresting, then I got to the propulsion training in the cave and was so turned off by the controls that I just turned the game off. That's my full experience with The Outer Wilds.

I'm fully aware that I'm in the wrong, the absurd levels of praise it gets speaks to that. I can also tell its a game that I will not be able to tolerate playing.

that's true, but he didn't know that. I also kinda rushed through that first area thinking I was on a time limit.

I could understand a complete newcomer to games not reading what the guy says when he gives you the launch code, or not noticing the button prompt to translate that pops up every time you look at Nomai text but Jeff really has no excuse.

I literally forces you to bring the translator out when you look at Nomai text.

One thing I admit I personally don't understand is, why would a time loop make someone want to rush?? I don't see the logic behind that, although I'm sure there is some...

I could see it making you want to rush when you're already in the middle of reading something really interesting and you know the time loop is about to end, but besides that...

I think that the idea is that, since you know you're on a time limit you're trying to rush to get things done before time "runs out". Now of course, in Outer Wilds time doesn't run out like that. Though you are on a loop, you have basically infinite time to do anything you want. But I can see someone just starting out, who knows about the time loops but hasn't experience the game really, feeling pressured into rushing around.

I feel if you didn't get off the starting planet you may as well have not played Outer Wilds since exploring the solar system is the game. You should definitely give it another shot.

It also just got GOTY from Edge and Eurogamer so I don't think this will be a Giant Bomb special like the last few years. This is their most traditional pick since Shadow of Mordor.

I didnt like outer wilds at all. Just couldnt get into it. I gave it enough goes and explored a few planets and got a bunch of clues. I just didnt like the Flying in that game.

Wow, this dude went from annoying as fuck to an absolute gem and staple over the years. This sucks.

If the pattern holds he'll be on the Waypoints podcast soon enough.

It is going to be weird not having Dan in a front-facing role for once. But what he is doing sounds like a way in to his dream so great for him.

It's wild to think of him leaving though. He even says in the Beastcast that whenever people predicted who might leave next he never once saw somebody guess him. That is definitely my experience as well.

I think Natalie would be a good shout, though literally the only hires people managed to guess were Dan and Jason haha. I also suspect we will be seeing a lot more Mike Mahardy in the immediate future.

I don't know about that he clearly still loves them but I think like Austin this was an opportunity he could not turn down.

Anyway Mario Party's on now. Smart money's on Abby - it is always hilarious how panicked Dan gets when he has to actually play somebody who enjoys the games.
