31. Swimming in an Empty Sky
Game: Murasaki Tsurugi Score: 52/100 Nominator: UF8 Things I Liked: That it was once uploaded to YouTube Things I Disliked: That it is no longer uploaded to YouTube This will be a special ranking. The video has been made unavailable since I listened to it while making the original list, and I cant find it even with the name and game, so I cant listen to it for second impressions as I write this. So uh, heres my first impressions notes: The song only even really becomes a song at 0:48. I like the violin or whatever the stringed instrument is, but the weird drums in the background, I don't know. I like the Italian-esque strings and horns in the background. Overall, this is a little too laidback for my tastes, it feels like something you'd hear in a restaurant. 30. Cyrus, the Scholar
Game: Octopath Traveler Score: 54/100 Nominator: Zigzagoon Things I Liked: Piano and violin Things I Disliked: Nothing, really Please tell me that Im not the only person reminded of Pirates of the Caribbean by this. Right? I know that cant be their goal because this is the song of a scholar (I assume, at least by the title), but come on. Especially the opening, it sounds right out of PotC. I like the downturn at 0:56, I like the piano that briefly starts just after that, I like the winding of the music, and I like the violin at 1:35. Overall, a solid JRPG song, though I would never, ever guess its for a scholar. --- Not changing this sig until I decide to change this sig. Started: July 6, 2005 ... Copied to Clipboard!

29. That Persons Name Is
Game: Bravely Default Score: 55/100 Nominator: Raka_Putra Things I Liked: The overall melody and energy Things I Disliked: The guitar riffs I never understood the love for this song. Its good, its really solid, but its not crazy good. Part of my objection to it is that the violins really work, but I dont like the guitar riffs. I realize that guitars and violins were invented at about the same time, but guitars just seem so much more modern. The semi-medieval world of BD needs music that just feels like it predates guitars, is all. Not to imply that the guitar playing is bad or anything, but it feels out of place. A different instrument would have worked better for me. The song itself does hit all of the right JRPG beats, though, especially the main recurring violin string. I dont know the word for it, but an example is at 0:12. --- Not changing this sig until I decide to change this sig. Started: July 6, 2005 ... Copied to Clipboard!

Oh yeah another thing about it that I somehow didn't even realise myself. It's an extremely loose improv medley of the boss themes in it. Or at least it is according to the composer.
Upon checking, I was able to identify one of them at least, and I could barely parse out elements of a second. Game: Murasaki Tsurugi Score: 52/100 Nominator: UF8 https://picosong.com/whtaW Things I Liked: That it was once uploaded to YouTube Things I Disliked: That it is no longer uploaded to YouTube I get a real Italian-esque vibe from this, Im not sure why. I cant even define what Italian-inspired music should sound like. The song really kicks into gear at 0:46, before then is just a very long buildup. The stringed instruments are solid, as are the chimes that occasionally kick in, but Im not a huge saxophone buff. Were also almost three minutes in before the song reveals that it has a piano involved! Overall, the song is okay, but its too laidback for my tastes. Game: Tokyo Xanadu Score: 56/100 Nominator: Janus5k Things I Liked: The first 13 seconds of buildup Things I Disliked: Slowing down at 2:35 At 0:27, Im briefly reminded of MGS1s main theme, the one they had to stop using because they got sued. Anyway, Im not a big anime-style music buff, so Im probably not the correct guy to analyze what makes this work. At 1:17, it gets more heroic, I like that tune. I mean, yeah, this gets me in the mood for a sci-fi adventure, so good work there. Actually, the weirdest thing I have to say about this is my original notes from listening to it the first time: This would be a great anime opening theme if you got a 17 year-old girl to sing lyrics about destiny and friendship over. Boy oh boy. Incidentally, this video was also deleted by YouTube, but it was much easier to track down another link for it. Anyway, I like the piano, the horns, and the barely audible guys in the background going OOOOHHHHH, thats my kind of jam. But at 1:38, it takes a more serious turn. It reminds me actually of a dark 80s kid movie, the type they dont make anymore. What was that movie about the kid who falls into a sewer and explores a fantasy world of kangaroo ninjas? Servants of the Scourge Game: Terraria Calamity Score: 57/100 Nominator: NFUN Things I Liked: Part that slows down at around 1:00 Things I Disliked: The synthesized horns This is the second of three Terraria songs in this list, but really, all of them are solid. I really like the gongs and the WOWEWEWEWEWEWP video game noises at the beginning. I become less into this when it turns into a synthesized horn for a while, but it returns to the gongs eventually anyway, so I can forgive that. I feel the epic flightiness of this song. It gets me pumped to battle a world-devouring monster or something, *possibly* with the power of friendship behind me. I like the strings that kick in at 0:20 and the keyboard sound at 0:39, and the instrument at 0:58. As you go along, the song increases in complexity, and each change makes the song itself better. 21. Scala Ad Caelum
Game: Kingdom Hearts 3 Score: 58/100 Nominator: Pirateking2000 Things I Liked: Solid orchestra music Things I Disliked: Reminds me of Kingdom Hearts This is fairly unremarkable epic orchestra music, so I hope no one minds if I take this opportunity to complain about Kingdom Hearts. Every Disney and Final Fantasy world is its own planet, a kid goes adventuring between planets is the simplest premise in the world to make a good series out of it. Just have the main character be some wannabe engineer kid who discovers or makes a spaceship and blasts off and gets wrapped up fighting an evil wizard who wants to blow up the galaxy. Right? Wrong. Instead it involves time travel, clones, digital clones, wizards who track you because you have an X on your clothes, undeniable proof that we totally owned you lamers, and clones of discarded vessels of parts of hearts in a digital world. Its mind-boggling how convoluted and silly this series lore became. The only thing that even approaches it is MGS, but I feel with MGS that Hideo Kojima knows what hes doing and has a point to make by making everything so ridiculous, whereas with KH it feels more like they had to keep making spinoffs but wanted every single one to be important to the storyline, but couldnt advance things significantly until it was time for KH3. But even then, I do respect that KH sort of has a vision and sticks to it. Its incredible that someone said Lets make a big budget open world photorealistic video game version of Pirates of the Caribbean 3 that explains nothing and makes no sense unless youve already watched the movie, and then got it approved. KHs vision is terrible, but never compromises with it, and in that way I sort of like it. --- Not changing this sig until I decide to change this sig. Started: July 6, 2005 ... Copied to Clipboard!

Pokemon music has this really distinct feeling to it that I guess Im just instinctively used to after having played a million hours of it. Ive never touched the series, I just know it as the series with girls who wear large hats who ruin Most Powerful Fictional Character contests. Anyway, I like this song. Its adventurous and magical and all of that, everything it needs to be. I have one niggle with it, though: its not very fantastical and nonsensical, which is what an Alice in Wonderland song needs to be. Game: Ace Combat 7 Score: 61/100 Nominator: Murphiroth Things I Liked: Things I Disliked: And so ends Murphiroth. I ranked this at 39/100, listened to it a second time while writing the write-up, realized Id massively underrated it, and bumped it up. I really like the opening of a few guys saying whatever in wispy voices in the background, but I really like the very slow buildup. The guys return and start chanting in increasingly epic ways as new instruments join the song. In fact, when it becomes more of a traditional song at like 2:00 and the buildup stops, I actually like it less, but they return at 2:30, so its okay. That said, it has an extremely weak ending, among the weakest of any song so far. It spends like 25 seconds just trailing off into nothing. Even with that, I still find this to be a great sort of background song, not necessarily something Id want to hear in combat, but rather something I imagine as being used in a montage as a bunch of pilots suit up for battle, kiss their wives goodbye, etc. --- Not changing this sig until I decide to change this sig. Its energetic but extremely foppish, telling you exactly what youre in for. The general adventure music it turns into is a little weaker, but it still gets the job done. This is such an excellent song that does its job so well that I almost cant even say anything more about it, so let me change the subject a little: why do almost all retro indie games riff off of the NES? I can recall seeing maybe ten SNES-inspired ones, and zero N64/PS1-inspired ones. I realize that NES-style sprites are easier to make, but is that the only reason?
