And I have no idea what the second movie for this week would be. The local art theater has been really bad at not actually announcing what their showing ahead of time, and I feel like they've been increasingly bad about getting art films that have already had home releases. I've reached the point where I've basically seen everything at the other theaters, excluding films obviously targeted at children and teenagers - I'll obviously go see the big releases in that category, but otherwise no.

May just see Dumbo on Friday night, FUCK *all* the critics, I'm gonna see it for myself. Guardian (A Paper that's little better than the Daily Mail, to be fair) rubbished it.

Maybe US on Saturday. A lot of people seem disappointed but a lot of people like it, seems like an even split.

Anyone else miss when Tim Burton used to make original movies instead of remake after remake? Don't bring Batman into this please.

Something that kind of confounds me is how Roger Ebert gave lower ratings to Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Batman, and Batman Returns than he later did for Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland, and Dark Shadows. What in the world? I understand why Ebert didn't care for Beetlejuice and his Batman films (never seen Edward Scissorhands) but still.

for all of your complaints about ebert, there's one simple explanation: ebert was a terrible critic. his edward scissorhands review in particular is pathetic.

It's a little easy to doubt Ebert in some of these cases in hindsight due to the popularity of the films in question, but I'm generally able to see what he saw even when I disagree heavily. I love Die Hard, but I understand why Roger didn't care for it (although it's still a pretty stupid review in any case).

Speaking of which, I wanted to bring up a point how watching some movies helps appreciate others more, for instance Con Air for Die Hard and Captain Marvel for both Robocop and The Iron Giant.

I'm guessing I'm the only one here who watches WorldClassBullshitters on occasion? They have some good points but overall try to make out everything as the end of entertainment or stupid crap. As well as feeding into the borderline troll-worthy anti-social justice wave, insinuating Captain Marvel is the MCU's "first failure" and finding it worse than Justice League somehow.

Side note: I'm glad Captain Marvel seems to have largely weathered its controversy beyond a few Internet circles.

it's pretty easy to see what he saw - he was very much an "oooh pretty pictures" critic (though this aspect wasn't as apparent in his earlier reviews).

this is very clear in his phantom menace review. that review is simply an insult to the field of film criticism and it saddens me that he was the most popular film critic of all time.

Episode I is popular enough where I don't feel that's much of a fluke. Or maybe I'm reading too much into people who praise the prequels at the expense of the sequel trilogy.

The only Roger Ebert review where I'm left truly scratching my head is his review of Home Alone 3. Also, Roger admitted full well to giving special-effects films a high rating if they manage to truly sell him on another world, hence 3.5 stars for films like Tron and The Spirits Within and 4 stars for films like Dick Tracy and Avatar.

yeah, ebert's review was kind of an anomaly at the time. the whole "prequelism" thing didn't become so prevalent until the era of the sequel trilogy.

but even if the phantom menace would be the most praised movie ever, i'd still have a gigantic problem with ebert's review because he's saying "this is a 3.5/4 movie because OOOH PRETTY PICTURES." the fact that he acts like a movie is nothing more than a showcase for ILM's nifty CGI technology reveals how incredibly superficially he approached the movies he was reviewing.

I'm avoiding further trailers. I saw the first "real" trailer that supposedly only showed stuff within the first 20 mins, but no more. I do mostly trust them with the marvel trailers though.

(Yes, I'm a masochist but at least Tommy Morrison (GRHS) was convincing enough to make you want to see his character get 7 kinds of shit kicked out of him by the very man he betrayed in order to get to the top. The one saving grace about that movie)

I was actually baffled when I saw this trailer. I know people joke all the time about "well, I guess I just saw the whole movie" when it comes to spoilery trailers but I feel like literally the entire story was in here - even the ending!

I actually completely swore off trailers two years ago for movies I even sort of think I'll care about, and I can say it's enormously improved my movie viewing experience.

I feel like siding with those who liked Captain Marvel even though I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. I mean, at this point saying whether you "like" or "dislike" a movie feels kind of arbitrary in some instances, or at least doesn't convey the full picture.

Even though I would not say Captain Marvel was not all that good, it did have everything that endears the MCU to me, and I have to imagine lots of others felt similarly (else the film wouldn't have made so much money). I like seeing Brie Larson in new group shots with the other Avengers actors. Feels so heartwarming.

Just feel very affectionate towards Captain Marvel.
