yeah, ebert's review was kind of an anomaly at the time. the whole "prequelism" thing didn't become so prevalent until the era of the sequel trilogy.

but even if the phantom menace would be the most praised movie ever, i'd still have a gigantic problem with ebert's review because he's saying "this is a 3.5/4 movie because OOOH PRETTY PICTURES." the fact that he acts like a movie is nothing more than a showcase for ILM's nifty CGI technology reveals how incredibly superficially he approached the movies he was reviewing.


In fairness Episode I had a Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes before bad reviews for the 3D re-release pulled it down.
