joker becomes the third 2019 movie to hit the IMDb top 250, after endgame and toy story 4. (i won't count parasite as that movie hasn't been released in theaters in the west yet.) i'm definitely interested in it!

interesting how all three of those movies were based on IP.

Saw Joker last night, it was enjoyable. House was fucking packed, Wound up in Row K.

Yes, I laughed a number of times at the things, I really shouldn't have. Feh, If I'm going to hell I won't be lonely.

Phoenix was electric.

Awaiting Gemini Man on Friday.

Saw Lion King 2019 at a theatre that was still hanging on to it, and Downton Abbey a second time with my MIL.

Saw Hotel Artemis on Friday with my mom, was very forgettable.

Saw Predator (the original) last Sunday and what a movie. Probably not one of my favorites but I think I found something I liked in every scene, even if it might have just been the cinematography. How did Schwarzenegger keep finding roles he was perfectly cast for back then? First Terminator and then this. Makes the new Predator film look horrible though.

So my dad was in town visiting and somehow The Mummy 1999 was brought up and he'd never seen it and no idea what it was, so obviously we had to watch it

I went into it thinking it was really good, coming out of it I think it might be one of my favourite movies.

Just got back from Judy. Hard to watch, but only because of the subject matter. Renee was terrific.

I watched Tron last Sunday and didn't have as good a time as I had last time I watched it (a little over five years ago, this is my second time). It's a pretty typical fantasy story redeemed by an interesting set-up, exposition that feels natural, a compelling lead performance from Jeff Bridges, visuals that are somewhat spell-binding even by today's standards (movie's a bit too proud of its CGI though, but at least it was depicting stuff inside a computer so the datedness has an excuse), and an underrated villain in Edward Dillinger, who seems like someone Trump would get along with. David Lisberger seems like another George Lucas-type who's better at directing special effects than actors. I can see how this movie inspired John Lasseter to make feature-length CGI movies, but too bad he turned out to be the PG version of Harvey Weinstein.

I started Gone with the Wind last night and finished it this morning. I was inspired to watch it by one YouTube channel that posed the question of whether the movie is worth watching in light of a screening of the movie in some vintage theater being cancelled for values reasons, and I'll answer a resounding "yes" with some reservations.

I finally watched the live action Aladdin. It was pretty good.

Also watched After on Netflix and it was eh. Shadow of the Moon, also on Netflix, was pretty good. Pretty interesting set up and slightly unexpected turn.

Did anyone else see The Lighthouse? Dude Willem Dafoe is so fucking good in this movie it's crazy. When he busted out that big-ass rant I was Post Malone tits meme for five minutes straight. Absolute career highlight if not his finest performance. The whole film is just damn near perfect really

It's just so well executed in so many ways - cinematography, editing, orchestral score, vfx, creature design, casting. Has group character establishment ever been more efficient than that 150 second chopper ride? Granted they aren't deep characters but I've seen so many movies spend 45 minutes gathering a party that doesn't have half the personality of that crew

Watched Maleficent: Mistress of All Evil. Man all the world building mumbo-jumbos in the movie is like...weird. But at least I can think of it as a separate entity from the original Sleeping Beauty now since it's just so different.

There were also many plot contrivances that I'm not too hot on.

But the scheming villain is pretty cool I guess.

I was thinking that too. It's like on par with the police line-up in The Usual Suspects for scenes that establish the main characters so well.

reminds me of when the walker brothers were talking about how in general, non-main characters in '70s and '80s movies had way more personality than those kinds of characters in later movies. they gave the characters in the zion battle in the matrix revolutions as an example of a bunch of characters with 0% personality. they also talked about how during the shooting of a new hope, george lucas told the dude who played porkins his entire backstory so that he could really feel the part, even though it was minor. so it could be a directing thing. or maybe back then, they just got better actors for minor parts.

Really disappointed with Joker, don't really have any serious feelings on it to share, was just expecting more. 3.5/5

Saw Peanut Butter Falcon, was really impressed by how much Shia sold his character. Would definitely recommend. 4/5.

EDIT: Here's the list of 2019 movies I've seen so far from best to worst, the ranking changes kinda often depending on how I'm feeling, especially with the Marvel stuff:
