Here's some cool games I played that didn't quite make my Top 10, but I feel deserve mention

Donut County - Cool game about dropping things into holes. Mostly memorable for the song that plays when you complete a stage -

Kirby Star Allies - They made another Kirby sidescroller! It was super easy, but I enjoyed it! Still need to play the DLC that's supposed to kick you in the balls.

Pokemon: Let's Go Pikachu! - They remade Pokemon Yellow but with Pokemon GO! mechanics! I don't really like Pokemon GO! but it works surprisingly well here.

Forza Horizon 4 - Recognition for once again making another game that's like Burnout Paradise, but isn't Burnout Paradise.

Persona Dancing Triple Pack - Includes Persona 3/5 Dancing along with an HD port of Persona 4 Dancing. 4 is still great and 3 is the better of the two newer games. The remixes in 5 just sound wrong.

Celeste - Only just started this recently. Seems like a fun meat boy clone and I like the weird sound effects when the characters talk.

A Way Out - Played through this game with one of my friends and while I wouldn't call it a good game, we had fun trying to make it through this split screen co-op action game about breaking out of prison

#5 Bayonetta/Bayonetta 2



Sure I already played these games on PS3 and Wii U, but I had to import the Non-Stop Climax Edition when they brought these over to Switch. Had a nice steelbook plus it was the only way to get a physical version of Bayonetta 1 on Switch.

4. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

The switch port of Tropical Freeze was a very FUNKY version of the game. I never really played much of the original version on Wii U, I think I only played through all of World 1, but I played significantly more of the Switch version. I didn't use Funky all that much although I'm glad he's there, but I did take advantage of the extra health bar the mode gives you while playing with the other characters. Made for a much more leisurely and enjoyable experience of the game compared to the stress filled platforming that the original mode provided

This is weird because I'm not really much of a Marvel fan in the first place, but I've always enjoyed Spider-Man movies and video games, especially the ones on SNES/Genesis and N64. I picked this up with the intention to play it, but there were so many other games around that time that it just sort of moved to the back of the line.

8. Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise

I was planning on playing this Yakuza take on the Fist of the North Star franchise after I finished up catching up on the main series, but...well we'll get to that later. Always a big fan of Fist of the North Star I've seen all of the original anime and some of the movies and also a lot of the games based on the series. Most of those games were bad, but this seemed like the first one that would be good! Maybe next year I'll get to it

More games I've played before in Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night, but I was more than happy to replay these games and in fact did so the day they came out. They came out the same day as Season 2 of Castlevania on Netflix and both of those combined helped me keep my mind off the death of a friend that also happened that same day as I drowned myself in an excessive amount of Castlevania.

Also I'm just glad Konami remembered they have all these Castlevania games and should release a bigger collection of them.

5. Hitman 2

This game seems like less of a sequel and more of just "Season 2 of Hitman 1" I've been slowly catching up on the whole series from the very beginning (this is actually like Hitman 7 they just restarted the numbering because that's always a smart thing to do). They seem like fun murder simulators and the this and the previous game seem to have a lot more humor injected into them than the past almost like Agent 47 has become self aware of the ridiculous situations he puts himself in.

I'm still not quite sure if this is a DLC add-on or a full game prequel or what, but Xenoblade 2 was one of my top 10 games from last year and I'm totally down to play more. Much like other games on this list it just came out at a bad time and I had no real chance to get to it. On the flip side though the OST is rad and I've listed to that a few times.

2. Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA

The #1 game from my top unplayed games from 2017. When this originally released I was still catching up on other Ys releases like the PS4 version of Origin, the Steam release of Seven and Celceta on the Vita. Also the translation was all screwed up so I was also waiting for that to get patched. In the end it all worked out because after finally playing it and getting the platinum it might be the best Ys game in every department outside of soundtrack (although there's still good music here!). It brought back the party system from the last 2 Ys games and introduced a new camping system where you're trying to find survivors on this island you're stranded on and bringing them back to camp and having them take up jobs in the camp while you constantly bring back supplies and defend the village from raids. Also continuing the trend of Falcom putting more and more story into their games, this is definitely the most story-heavy Ys game to date, I think it took upwards to 80 hours for me to finish everything this game had to offer.

Then to top it off Ys IX got announced last week for 2019! Very excited although it'll probably take beyond 2019 to come out in english.

Yeah SC is just a personal preference. Tbh its only thre because I barely played that many new games this year and I put some time into it.

Most of my fav games this year are games from the past like nier Bayonetta 2 and hollow knight.

Straight up Bayonetta 2 is my fav game on switch period. I never played it on wii u but damn this game is a masterpiece. Nier on Xbox one is also amazing.

Tetris is not my go to puzzle game, but Rez and Lumines were cool so I totally want to check this out eventually. Especially because of all the people who say they love playing it exclusively in VR. As a long time PSVR owner I'm always down to try out a new game on if it's worth playing (and won't make me motion sick)

4. Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom

Shocked myself I never got around to this (I blame other big games that were out early in the year that I was still playing). I loved the first Ni no Kuni it reminded me a lot of Dragon Quest and now it sounds like this one infuses a bit of Suikoden into that formula as well while also revamping the combat to be more of an action game.

I spent most of the middle part of my 2018 catching up on the entire Yakuza series. I had played Yakuza 1 and 2 on PS2 back in 2017, then this year I played 3, 4, 5, 0 and Kiwami doing complete playthroughs of all of them and obtaining the platinums. The got incrementally better with each release BUT THEN 0 JUST LEAPFROGGED ALL OF THEM. The amount of quality of life improvements was staggering while still retaining the feel of the older games in the series. I was always a Kiryu guy (mainly because he's the one that's playable in all of them), but they finally let Majima come out to play in 0 and he not only steals the show, but you get to see his descent into madness that makes him the character we already knew from Yakuza 1-5.

In a post metal gear world I feel Yakuza is the closest we'll ever get to capturing the right mix of serious action and ridiculous japanese humor that seamlessly switches back and forth between the two without seeming awkward or goofy. 2017 was a gauntlet of games that could have won Game of the Year in any other year. In my own top 10 last year I feel the top 7 or so I could have given GotY if they had come out in 2016. If I had actually play Yakuza 0 last year when it came out I would have been comfortable putting it in that same group of games and it probably would have been #4 or #5 in that list. Go play it!

As previously mentioned my entire plan for 2018 was to catch up on the Yakuza series so that I could play at least 6 (and hopefully Kiwami 2) before the end of the year. I was on track, I had finished all the previous games by like October....but those familiar with October well you can probably guess what happened. I will most likely play these games early into 2019 and maybe you can look forward to seeing one of them in next years best old games! I'm very excited to see the all new Dragon Engine in action

I also played the Octopath demo, picked it up on day one, and have yet to play it. Every time I think about getting to it I think, "do I really want to invest this much time into this game right now?", and then go play something else.

10. WarioWare Gold

All the mashing! All the touching! All the twisting! Gold combines all the best games throughout the franchise while also introducing some new ones for a count of over 300 microgames. There's so many unlockables in this I'm pretty sure I still don't have them all. Coolest new feature was being able to dub over all the cutscenes with your own voice using the 3DS microphone. I spent way too much just doing that trying to get my dub work just right. The only shame is that it was on 3DS instead of Switch, but hopefully there's a new WarioWare in the works for that!

It's basically a full game prequel reusing the engine and many assets (it is, of course, much shorter than XB2, but probably still like 30 hours). I liked the characters a lot better (particularly because I hate Rex...), but there was some lazy game design in that about half of the game is basically forced sidequests (which I would have done anyway, but I imagine it would be pretty annoying for someone inclined to skip them).

Regular multiplayer is fine. Zombies mode I'm never going to touch. Blackout mode oh yes oh yes. PUBG was #3 game last year and that was a lot on the power of playing it with my friends. Blackout mode is just a better version of PUBG in every way, but I've played it 99% solo because not many people I would play it with actually bought it. I still really enjoy it, but I imagine I would love it more if I was doing duos and squads.

They really should have just sold this mode separately from the main game or put it out for free like Fortnite. The closest they did is cut out the zombies mode and put it out for half price on PC.

8. Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon

Curse of the Moon is a kickstarter bonus extra game that was meant to tide us over until the full version of Bloodstained comes out eventually. They got Inticreates to make it though and we ended up getting a game that might end up being as good if not better than core Bloodstained. They basically made a new Castlevania III. That's really all I have to say for you to know if its for you or not.

The cool thing they did is the ending will change based on who you recruit or kill in your journey. Recruit characters and you can switch to them at any time. Kill them and Zangetsu gains an extra ability to help him get through the game. After you beat the game once, the first replay of the game is actually a direct sequel to the first playthrough with one of the coolest final bosses I've fought in 2018.

I'm still really looking forward to Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, but if that somehow ends up bombing I'll still feel it was worth it because we got Curse of the Moon.

7. Dragon Ball FighterZ

Okay look.. Ive been a fan of the series going back to 1995 when they started showing original Dragon Ball on I think CBS on the weekends . Ive played a lot of Dragon Ball video games. Maybe almost all of them. Starting out with the weird NES games that I would barely call games to the Super Butodens, Legend of the Super Saiyan and Hyper Dimension on SNES to Ultimate Battle 22 and Dragon Ball GT on PSX to all the Bukodais and Raging Blasts and beyond. Most of them were barely passable with only a few I would classify as good (Advance Adventure, Attack of the Saiyans and Tenkaichi 2 come to mind). For it to take 3 decades for anyone to make a Dragon Ball game that is truly amazing is ridiculous. Arc System Works deserves all the praise for finally pulling it off. I stuck with online ranked mode in this game probably longer than I stuck with any other fighting game getting up to Supreme Kai or Demon rank around there before the skill level became too much for me. The story was kinda forgettable but Android 21 is rad as an original character and Im not even a big fan of the 3 on 3 style of fighting games, I would much prefer it being just 1 on 1.but this game just got it. They nailed the feeling of Dragon Ball perfectly and then once they started selling music that comes straight from the anime it was perfect. Im just sad that by the time the DLC characters had started coming out I was already finished with everything I wanted to do with the game and had essentially forgotten how to play well so I never really got to play with them a ton. Theres a deluxe edition coming next year with all the DLC though so I would recommend checking that out if you havent yet!
