Polish the graphics to modern times and maybe have the ability to turn random battles on and off so if you want to grind you can but if you don't you can just sail to wherever you're going uninterrupted (even then, later in the game you can go above and below the standard area to accomplish this). Even the analog stick in the 3DS wasn't enough, because it was programmed for 4-button input.
