Parents of a teenage boy who took his own life have complained after their Catholic priest criticised him at the funeral for killing himself.

Father Don LaCuesta in the service questioned whether Maison Hullibarger, 18, would enter heaven, horrifying his parents and family.

The Archdiocese of Detroit have relieved Father LaCuesta from funeral duties, but the family want him fired.

Catholicism has traditionally taught that suicide is an unforgiveable sin.

Only recently has the church said that extreme psychological stress could mean forgiveness for those who take their own lives.

Maison, from Temperance, Michigan, took his own life on 4 December.

His parents Jeff and Linda Hullibarger sought the help of their priest, Father LaCuesta, before the funeral.

"We wanted him to celebrate how Maison lived, not how he died," Ms Hullibarger told the Detroit Free Press .

But the priest used the service at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic church to attack their child.

"He was up there condemning our son, pretty much calling him a sinner," Mr Hullibarger said. "He wondered if he had repented enough to make it to heaven. He said 'suicide' upwards of six times."

The appearance at the funeral against their wishes of their son's football coach, who reportedly bullied Maison and his brothers, added to their pain.

A statement released by the Archdiocese of Detroit said Father LaCuesta would not preach at funerals "for the foreseeable future" and apologised for what happened, but the family want him removed from his post to stop him upsetting others.

"We're afraid that, like the Catholic Church does, they'll send him off and he'll do it to somebody else," Mr Hullibarger said.

When I was 7 years old, and my brother was 9....we would go to Sunday school with our dad. We weren't exactly a religious family, but my dad would go because there was a woman he liked there. We'd tag along. Plus they had free donuts and juice in the morning.

Well, one day we were all singing Jesus songs and making crafts and stuff....and it was pretty harmless stuff. It was just nice kinda socializing with kids sorta the same age as me.

But then the teacher lady kinda started getting into some preachy boring stuff. Trying to integrate it into fun lessons and sandwich it between crafts and games so we didn't pick up on the indoctrination that was clearly taking place.

My brother was super intelligent for his age. He was in all the gifted programs and stuff. He was 9, but he was reading at a college level.

I remember he raised his hand and asked a question about the lesson. It was harmless. He was just pointing out how one thing she just said kinda contracted something she said earlier in the day. I don't even remember what it was. I just remember how defensive the teacher got. She took my brother out of the room, then came back a few minutes later. My brother was gone. I didn't see him for the rest of the day.

At the end of the day I saw my brother with my dad and his face was really pale. I asked him what happened, where did they take him?

He didn't want to talk about it for a while, but eventually I got it out of him:

He said the teacher took him to this side room where there were like 5 adult guys, he guessed priests, just kinda standing in the middle of this very blank and empty boring room. The teacher left him in there alone with these strange guys. He said they all got around him in a circle and all bowed and placed their hands on my brother's head. He said they started praying for him and repeating over and over, "God please end this boy's doubt" "God please end this boy's doubt" over and over.

He said it felt like an hour, but it might have only been like 10 minutes. But it was creepy as fuck.

Then they just sent him out to the main room where my dad was having "adult" mass with everyone else.

It traumatized my brother for years and made him hate religion.

Lol Catholicism. This religion thinks its science. They keep revising it to fit with the time and to make up for their sex crimes. Just admit its complete bullshit already

Also, I'm not saying science is bullshit. Just saying that revising religion to fit with the times kind of invalidates the religion in my opinion

I'd be willing to say that for a great many sciences, or at least how science is generally interpreted by most people. Especially the sort of people who are usually the most anti-religion.

For most people, "science" is the religion of the modern age and "scientists" (ie, anyone with some pretense of academic authority) are basically the new priests. We just traded in frocks for white coats and the idiots fall lock-step in line while crowing about how enlightened they are for not falling for any of that "religion" nonsense. It's still blind faith and not really understanding the tenets of what you claim to believe in, just with a different paradigm to put on the pedestal.
