I'd be willing to wager that the real goal is to go after something like capitalism and they want/need to tie more of the world's problems to it to justify the hate. By turning racism from "a byproduct of tribalism that has always been around" to "this new thing" they can take the next step and say "what relatively modern thing caused modern racism to appear?" Their answer to that question would be, IMO, the thing they always wanted to go after in the first place.

Liberal probably would have worked fine. It's not really an alt-right buzzword the way "leftist" or even "SJW" are.

Never seen anyone call themselves a leftist, but I wouldn't be surprised if it started to be appropriated, since it's so commonly used nowadays.

That being said, the only reason it came into being was so that it could be framed as an "-ist", because enough of the right was tired of being called racist and sexist, even if they are.
